Full Moon Follies Sinks Ports 8-6

STOCKTON, Calif- If you're a believer that strange things happen when the moon is full, Wednesday's game between the Stockton Ports and Visalia Oaks might have confirmed your suspicions.
In an offensive tug-of-war that saw 14 total runs and 24 total hits, the Oaks took advantage of two costly Ports errors and held on for an 8-6 win to take a 2-1 series edge in their four game set at Banner Island Ballpark. With the loss, the Ports dropped five games behind the Oaks for first place in the Cal-League North Division. Bakersfield lost to Modesto 7-5, so the Ports still maintain their third place lead by 2.5 games.
With the Oaks on top 1-0, the Ports came out with guns blazing in the fourth. Eddie Cornejo led off the inning with a solo home run--his second of the homestand--to even the score. Following back-to-back walks to Gregorio Petit and Myron Leslie, Danny Putnam and Brian Snyder hit back-to-back doubles and sent the Ports on their way to a five run fourth off Oaks starter James Houser.
Ports starter Jared Lansford, making his first start of the season for Stockton since his call up from Kane County, threw 4.2 solid innings in which he allowed just one run. He couldn't quite get the final out in the fifth though, as with two down and Stockton up 5-1, Visalia blew up for three runs as part of a four run fourth (the inning started with a Sergio Pedroza solo home run). Lansford was eventually lifted in favor of Trent Peterson (3-6), who threw one pitch and induced a pop out to stop the bleeding.
The madness continued in the top of the sixth, as Gregorio Petit committed uncharacteristic back-to-back fielding errors, resulting in an unearned run that put the Oaks on top 6-5. The run resulted in Peterson taking a tough, tough loss as he was just on the mound at the wrong time.
Oakland A's reliever Scott Sourbeck made a rehab appearance in the seventh and allowed two singles, but was helped by a double play ball and a caught stealing. He faced three batters and did not allow a run.
The Oaks added two more in the eighth off Ports reliever Jeff Gray on an RBI triple from Josh Asanovich. Stockton rallied to load the bases in the ninth, but Snyder popped out to the shortstop to end the Ports rally. The Ports stranded eight total baserunners on the night.
Stockton and Visalia will play the final game of their four game series on Thursday night at Banner Island Ballpark. Ryan Webb (6-8, 4.93 ERA) will get the nod for the Ports, and he'll be opposed by Chris Mason (11-6, 4.23 ERA) for Visalia. Stockton will try and even the series, as first pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. PST.
