Fuel Announce 2015-16 Team Award Winners

INDIANAPOLIS - The Indy Fuel, proud ECHL affiliate of the National Hockey League's Chicago Blackhawks and American Hockey League's Rockford IceHogs, announced their 2015-16 team award winners Sunday afternoon at their second annual awards banquet at 502 East Events Centre in Carmel. Voted upon by the team's coaching staff, six awards in total were distributed Sunday - one day after the Fuel concluded their 2015-16 regular season.

The 2015-16 Indy Fuel team award winners are as follows, listed in the order they were distributed:

ROOKIE OF THE YEAR: CODY SHARIB

Sharib finished the year the Fuel's goal-scoring leader, netting 17 in 69 games played. The 25-year-old forward tallied 33 points (17g, 16a) this season, fifth-most on Indy's roster. A native of Needham, Mass., Sharib strung together eight points (1g, 7a) in a seven-game span from Jan. 10-24, including a career-high three assist performance Jan. 23 against Quad City. Coming from a collegiate career at the University of Connecticut, Sharib scored 15 of his 17 goals at even strength.

DEFENSEMAN OF THE YEAR: BEN MARSHALL

Marshall led all Fuel blueliners with 36 points (12g, 24a) in 2015-16, ranking him fourth in overall team scoring and third among all ECHL rookie defensemen. The 24-year-old from Mahtomedi, Minn. scored his first professional goal on Nov. 16 in Evansville, part of a hot stretch where he picked up two goals and six assists in seven games from Oct. 30 to Nov. 20. Marshall was one of only two players to appear in all 72 games for Indy, along with forward Rhett Bly. The former University of Minnesota defenseman's 187 shots on goal were second to only Peter Schneider's 200 on the Fuel roster.

LEADING SCORER: ALEX LAVOIE

Lavoie finished the 2015-16 campaign with 54 points (16g, 38a) in 71 games, breaking the Fuel's single-season scoring mark set last year by Garett Bembridge (52 points). The 22-year-old forward from Anjou, Quebec also set a franchise single-season record with 38 assists, breaking his own career-high mark in the process. Lavoie eclipsed the 50-point plateau for the second-straight season, coming three points shy of the 57 he recorded last year with the Florida Everblades (21g, 36a).

PENALTY KILLER AWARD PRESENTED BY MURELLO'S UPTOWN BAIL BONDS: MATT WHITE

One of the Fuel's most-trusted face-off specialists, White finished the season with 16 points (6g, 10a) in 65 games played. Three of the center's six goals were of the game-winning variety, placing him in a second-place tie on the Fuel roster in that category. White, a native of McMurray, Penn., is one of only three players remaining from the Fuel's inaugural game lineup to begin the 2014-15 season.

GAME CHANGER AWARD: NICK PETRECKI

Coming to Indy in a Jan. 7 trade from the Elmira Jackals for forward Kyle Stroh, Petrecki brought a veteran presence to the Fuel as big as his 6-foot-3, 240-pound frame. The 26-year-old defenseman recorded 11 points (4g, 7a) in 31 games with Indy, along with a +5 rating and 75 penalty minutes. Petrecki earned a PTO with the AHL's Chicago Wolves, where he appeared in three games from Feb. 26-28. The native of Schenectady, N.Y. ended the season serving as the Fuel's captain, after defenseman Zach Miskovic signed a PTO with the AHL's Charlotte Checkers.

MOST VALUABLE PLAYER: RHETT BLY

In his second full season with the Fuel, Bly recorded 30 points (15g, 15a) while appearing in all 72 games. The 26-year-old from Regina, Saskatchewan finished fourth in team goal-scoring and led Indy with six power play goals. Bly found the back of the net in five out of six games from Jan. 23 to Feb. 2, part of a 13-game span from Jan. 17 to Feb. 17 where he racked up 15 points (7g, 8a). A go-to player on both sides of the puck for the Fuel, Bly served as an alternate captain for most of the season.
