Seattle Sounders FC News Release
SEATTLE - After falling behind early and playing a man-down after the 55th minute, Sounders FC fought back and pulled away from CSD Comunicaciones as Mike Fucito scored two second-half goals and assisted on the first-half equalizer, helping to lead Seattle to a 4-1 victory in the first round of the group stage of the CONCACAF Champions League Tuesday night on the Xbox Pitch at CenturyLink Field.
The go-ahead goal came in the 61st minute when Fredy Montero rolled a ball into the box for Fucito, who worked an angle around his defender and fired a shot across the face of Comunicaciones goalkeeper Juan Paredes and inside the far post. Alvaro Fernandez was also credited an assist.
Fucito struck a second time in the 67th minute after receiving a ball forward from Fernandez in space and bent his 15-yard shot over a sprawling Paredes and into left side of the net. Brad Evans also assisted on the play. With the brace, Fucito has recorded five goals and one assist in his last five CCL matches.
Comunicaciones put themselves in the lead early when Bryan Ordonez sent a cross in from the right side and Jairo Arreola's header from five yards got past Seattle goalkeeper Terry Boss in the second minute.
Sounders FC equalized in the 35th minute when Fucito bent a corner kick toward the near post where a charging Brad Evans sent a header off the crossbar and into the goal.
Las Cremas pressured late and nearly put the ball in the net during a sequence in the 80th minute when the ball bounced around the box and Edgard Martinez's shot was cleared off the line by Patrick Ianni. After the stop, Terry Boss was able to make a diving save on Comunicaciones' rebound attempt by Fredy Thompson, preserving Seattle's lead.
Seattle's final goal came off a Fernandez cross which Comunicaciones substitute Rigoberto Gomez attempted to clear but sent it in the net for an own-goal in the 87th minute.
Eleven players were given cards on the night. Seattle's Lamar Neagle was ejected on a red card in the 55th minute and Edgard Martinez was issued a red card and ejected for Comunicaciones in the 80th minute. Ianni, James Riley, Leo Gonzalez, and Jhon Kennedy Hurtado received yellow cards for Sounders FC. Arreola, Carlos Castrillo, Adolfo Machado, Carlos Ramirez, and Thompson were issued cautions for Las Cremas.
The Rave Green registered 13 shots with five coming on goal while Comunicaciones were credited with 11 shots and three on goal.
Sounders FC next returns to MLS play, traveling to Texas to face FC Dallas on Saturday at Pizza Hut Park. The match will be televised on KONG TV 6/16 and kickoff is set for 6:00 p.m. PT. Seattle resumes CCL match play on August 23, when they face reigning Champions League winner, CF Monterey in Mexico at 5:00 p.m. PT.
