Ftorek to attempt 72-oz. steak challenge
March 18, 2009 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Amarillo Gorillas News Release
Amarillo, TX 3/18/09 - Though the hockey season will be over for the Amarillo Gorillas by Monday, March 23, Gorillas' defenseman Sam Ftorek is not finished competing.
Ftorek will take on Amarillo Dusters quarterback Matt Basseuner-and a very large slab of cow-as he attempts to eat the famed 72-oz. steak offered by The Big Texan restaurant in Amarillo.
The legendary Big Texan has long offered the steak free to anyone who can eat the meat, in addition to all the 'fixins', within one hour. The Gorillas' star blueliner will attempt to not only eat the meal within the time limit, but defeat Basseuner in the eating contest as well.
"I can eat a lot of steak," an apprehensive Ftorek said after agreeing to the challenge. "Ever since I signed with Amarillo back in the summer, I've had relatives telling me I should at least try the challenge. Everyone knows about The Big Texan and that 72-oz. steak."
Ftorek has fared well against CHL competition this season, leading all defensemen in scoring with 57 points in 61 games. The enormous meal, however, poses a different challenge for the veteran player.
"It's different than taking ice against another hockey team, because with the steak competition, it's just you against the inanimate object," said Ftorek. "You're supposed to defeat it, because it can't do anything to you, but it's still a very formidable opponent. This is unlike anything I've ever done."
Both players will be at The Big Texan Monday night, with the competition starting at 7:30 PM. Media and fans are welcome at the event. The winner will receive a special award from Gorillas and Dusters Owner Randy Sanders.
Ftorek and the Gorillas (17-41-3) will host the New Mexico Scorpions in their next game on Thursday, March 19. Tickets are available for the game by calling (806) 242-PUCK (7825).
The AMARILLO GORILLAS are celebrating their seventh season in "The Jungle" by offering special ticket prices to groups and parties! Call the Gorillas ticketing office at (806) 242-PUCK (7825) for more information, or drop by the Gorillas' new office at 901 S. Buchanan in downtown Amarillo.
