Wilmington Blue Rocks News Release
Lynchburg, VA - The Wilmington Blue Rocks (42-43, 10-5) batted around and then some in a five-run second inning that set the tone early for an 11-3 rout of the Lynchburg Hillcats (34-50, 5-9). The victory guarantees Wilmington a winning series and road trip. Wil Myers and Adrian Ortiz each finished with four of the team's season-best 21 hits. Myers drove in four and Adam Frost three, as he homered twice on a three-hit night. Wilmington has won six of eight in starting the second half a league-best 10-5.
Myers put the Rocks on the board with a two-out RBI single to left against Curtis Partch (3-7) in the opening inning. Lynchburg rallied with a pair of runs on successive two-out hits from Carlos Mendez and Neftali Soto against Buddy Baumann before 10 men batted and seven hit in Wilmington's five-run second.
Frost began the third with his second home run of the season. One out later, Ortiz doubled to chase Partch who allowed seven runs on 11 hits in 2.1 innings.
Frost homered to start a four-run fourth as well off of Daniel Guerrero. Baumann departed after four innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on six hits and a walk. He struck out six but fell short of qualifying for the win with his departure before the fifth.
Jairo Cuevas (3-3) provided four scoreless innings of piggyback relief thereafter and former Rock Devon Lowery made his first rehab appearance since joining the team with a scoreless ninth.
The three-game series continues concludes on Friday at 6:05 p.m. as the Blue Rocks bid for their second sweep of the season. Southpaw John Lamb (4-2, 1.55) gets the start against Lynchburg right-hander Jordan Hotchkiss (5-2, 2.47).
PEBBLES OF KNOWLEDGE:
The franchise record for hits in a game is 23 in a 20-3 defeat of Myrtle Beach on April 19, 1999.
Jarrod Dyson finished the night 3-for-6 with a double, an RBI, three runs scored, a steal and an outfield assist.
Wilmington's only sweep on the season came May 21-23 against Myrtle Beach at the Rocks' Frawley Stadium.
The Blue Rocks have won four straight against the Hillcats and four of five at City Stadium. Wilmington owns a 9-4 record against its divisional rival.
The âCats have dropped seven consecutive games overall in starting the second half a league-worst 5-9.
Adam Frost's pair of round-trippers lifted the squad's solo home run total to 24 of its league-low 35.
The infielder called his own shot for his first homer of the season at Salem on June 17, hitting it over the exact outfield sign he specified hours before the contest during batting practice. During Thursday's pre-game stretch, strength coach George Timke asked if Frost would call for a home run again. Frost seemed reluctant, but Timke pointed to a specific outfield advertisement and asked for one to that spot. Both of Frost's home runs sailed over that exact location. He has not made such predictions for any other game this season.
Wilmington seems to like blasting balls over the fence on this road trip. Potomac and Lynchburg comprise consecutive foes on three road trips this year. Through 13 games in those cities on two journeys, the Blue Rocks have hit 13 of their 21 road home runs. They have hit 22 in their other 72 total games to date.
Brian Rupp's squad stands within one game of .500 overall for the first time since it was 10-11 on April 30.
