Frost Heaves reveal first members of team

August 16, 2006 - American Basketball Association (ABA)
Vermont Frost Heaves News Release

South Burlington, VT. Defense and three-point shooting will be the hallmarks of the Vermont Frost Heaves when they begin play in the American Basketball Association in November, to judge by the team's initial player signings, which were announced today.

The group includes three wing players with professional experience playing oversees: 6'7" Travarus Bennett, who was Big Ten co-defensive player of the year and a 46.9% three-point shooter at Minnesota before taking his skills to Germany, Switzerland and Ireland; 6'5" Tyrone Levett, a stalwart at Alabama State who guided the Lakers to an NCAA tournament berth before starring in Ireland and Austria; and 6'5" Antonio Burks, whose three-point shooing turned Stephen F. Austin into a Southland Conference power and helped Frost Heaves coach Will Voigt's Ulriken Eagles reach the playoffs of Norway's top division last season.

In addition, the Frost Heaves have signed four players from last month's invitational camp. They include 6'8" Kevin Mickins, a former frontcourt star at Allegany Junior College and George Mason who has played in Portugal and Uruguay; 6'6" Markus Austin, who stands 11th on the all-time scoring list at Eastern Michigan, where he captained the team for two seasons; 6'4" Kevin Harrington, who had a stellar four-year career at Division II South Carolina-Spartanburg; and 6'2" B.J. Roberton, a former Vermont "Mr. Basketball" at Burlington High School and four-year starter at St. Michael's College.

"This crop of players is particularly well-suited to the ABA's up-and-down style, coach V's philosophy of motion offense and pressure defense, and the intimate scale of our venues," said Frost Heaves president and GM Alexander Wolff, whose regular dispatches about the team are being featured in Sports Illustrated and si.com. "More than that, they're hard workers and solid young men whom Vermonters will identify with."

The Vermont Frost Heaves will split their 18 home games between the Barre Municipal Auditorium and Burlington's Memorial Auditorium. For more information, contact Michael Healey at 802 860 0082 or email info@vermontfrostheaves.com or visit www.vermontfrostheaves.com or www.abalive.com.
