ABA to return to Chattanooga in 2007
August 16, 2006 - American Basketball Association (ABA) News Release
Indianapolis, IN. The American Basketball Association (ABA) today announced that the league will return to Tennessee in 2007 with the addition of a team in Chattanooga. According to Joe Newman, "The efforts of Gavin Raiteri and his group in Knoxville has lit a fire under Tennessee - and interest in the ABA has grown tremendously. Lo and behold, a great ownership group led by local businessman Patrick Chatman has reserved Chattanooga for next season and we couldn't be happier."
Chatman, a native of Pittsburgh and a former high school and college player, relocated to Chattanooga in 2002 and opened a very successful vocational school. He also began to referee high school and women's college basketball games. "I have been around the game of basketball since the days of DJ and Gus (Dennis Johnson and Gus Williams," said Chatman. "I have seen the pro game grow and change. Basketball is a theatrical sport that employs skill and talent all the time. Timing is everything. The Tennessee Valley and surrounding areas have a lot of talent waiting for the right opportunity. I want to be that portal for that blessed talent to achieve their dreams and become the next shoe contract millionaire/basketball stars while giving back to the community. I'm thrilled to be in the ABA."
The Tennessee Mud Frogs are leaping back into your backyard and will be making loud dunks, special passes, and entertaining the fans. "Why the Mud Frogs?" Chatman was asked. "You may get mud on your feet but that does not mean that you cannot still leap out of it and make a score in life." Note: OurSports Central no longer actively covers the American Basketball Association (ABA) as a professional league due in part to its inability to publish and play a schedule and the transitory nature of many of its teams.
