MIDLAND, TEXAS (JUNE 15, 2015) - Frisco RoughRiders outfielder Nomar Mazara has been named the Texas League Player of the Week for the week of June 8 - 14. Mazara put together a red-hot offensive stretch that included three home runs in a four-game span last week.
This marks the first time this season and the second time in Mazara's career that the Dominican Republic native has been named the Player of the Week in the TL. He previously won the honor on August 18, 2014 with the RoughRiders. The 20-year-old hit .500 (10 for 20) with one double, one triple, three home runs, five runs scored, 1.100 slugging percentage, .560 on-base percentage and 1.660 OPS. Mazara led the circuit in batting average, RBI, slugging and OPS over the past week. Since Tuesday, June 9, the lefty swinger is tied for first in all of Minor League Baseball in RBI, tied for third in total bases (22), tied for sixth in homers, third in slugging (High Desert's Zach Cone is first at 1.381) and fourth in OPS. Overall in the Texas League, he is seventh in batting (.304), tied for fifth in RBI (34) and fifth in total bases (102).
Mazara has been an offensive force lately, belting three homers in a four-game stretch last week and five in his last 12 games. He had a five-game RBI streak (totaling 12 RBI) that ended on Sunday and he currently boasts a seven-game hitting streak (11 for 24, .458). After matching a season-high with three RBI on Thursday, he drove home four runs on Friday.
Mazara joins Joey Gallo and Frank Lopez among RoughRiders who have won weekly Texas League honors this season. Gallo and Lopez were named TL Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, for the week of May 18 - 25.
Springfield Cardinals pitcher Arturo Reyes was named the circuit's Pitcher of the Week.
The RoughRiders return to the Metroplex on Sunday, June 21 to begin a four-game home stand against the Midland RockHounds. To celebrate Father's Day, the first 1,500 men (age 18 and older) to enter the gates at Dr Pepper Ballpark on Sunday will receive a free RoughRiders BBQ jersey apron and a spectacular fireworks show will follow the game.
