Frisco Erupts Late to Steal Opener
April 28, 2015 - Texas League (TL1)
San Antonio Missions News Release
San Antonio suffered a disappointing 8-6 loss to Frisco in Monday's series opener at Wolff Stadium after allowing four runs over the final two innings.
The Missions got off to a terrific start Monday night against 'Riders lefty Andrew Faulkner, scoring three in the first, highlighted by Hunter Renfroe's two-RBI double.
San Antonio starter Colin Rea cruised through his first two innings Monday before allowing Frisco to plate four runs (just two earned) on four hits in the top of the third.
In the bottom of the frame, the Missions answered back, tying the game at four on Yeison Asencio's one-out double to right.
Two innings later, Diego Goris put San Antonio back in front, 5-4 with a clutch, two-out, RBI double off Faulkner. The two-bagger extended Goris' hit streak to six games.
Rea put up zeroes in both the sixth and seventh to preserve the San Antonio lead. The Cascade, IA native scattered eight hits on the night and walked just one, while fanning six. In four starts at the Double-A level, Rea has allowed just four earned runs over 28 innings (1.29 ERA).
Unfortunately for Rea, he was once again denied his first Double-A win when catcher Jorge Alfaro drilled a two-run homer off reliever Brandon Alger (2-1) in the top of the eighth. In the top of the ninth, another top Texas prospect, Joey Gallo, gave Frisco some valuable insurance with a two-run triple off newcomer Aaron Northcraft.
The Missions did not go down quietly in the ninth, closing to within two on a Renfroe RBI single off Josh McElwee. However, McElwee (2nd save) did not allow any further damage, striking out Casey McElroy later in the frame with the tying runs on base.
Faulkner (2-1) picked up the win after allowing three earned runs on 10 hits and a walk, while striking out four over seven.
San Antonio (6-11) resumes its four-game series with Frisco (6-11) on $2 Tuesday presented by KCWX. Fans can get parking, reserved tickets, Mertz sausage wraps, beer and now tacos all for just $2. Bryan Rodriguez (0-3, 8.36) will get the ball for the Missions, while the RoughRiders counter with fellow righty Jake Thompson (1-2, 5.14). First pitch is 7:05 PM.
Mission Notes: Travis Jankowski finished 2-for-4 with a run scored and a walk to extend his TL-high hit streak to 14 games (.418: 23-for-55). Alberth Martinez set a new club, season high with his three runs scored Monday. Northcraft arrived from Triple-A El Paso as the corresponding move for RHP Jay Jackson (to EP). Renfroe's three RBI were a season high (his first multi-RBI game of the season).
