Frisco RoughRiders News Release
SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS (April 27, 2015) - The Frisco RoughRiders delivered the knockout blow in a back-and-forth game with the San Antonio Missions on Monday night. Riders catcher Jorge Alfaro batted in three runs including a go-ahead two-run home run in the eighth inning as the Riders won 6-5 in the first of four games at Nelson Wolff Municipal Stadium.
Alfaro helped the Riders erase a 3-0 deficit in the third inning when Frisco tallied four runs thanks to three two-out hits. Tyler Pastornicky's third double of the season scored Royce Bolinger to put the Riders on the board. Nomar Mazara followed with a single to score Pastornicky to cut the Missions lead to 3-2. Joey Gallo, playing in his third game this season, ripped a ball off Missions first baseman Luis Donoromo's glove allowing Mazara to score the tying run. Ruled an error, Gallo was not awarded with a RBI. Gallo alertly swiped second base to put himself in scoring position before Alfaro came through with a single to left field giving the Riders a 4-3 lead.
The Missions answered in the bottom of the third against Andrew Faulkner (2-1) when Yeison Asencio doubled home Alberth Martinez to tie the game at four. Then in the fifth inning, Martinez led off with a single and advanced to second base on an error by Chris Garia. The Missions capitalized when Diego Goris doubled and the Missions led 5-4.
Faulkner (2-1) battled for seven innings, allowing five runs (three earned) and worked around 10 hits. Alfaro helped him escape the bottom of the seventh when he threw out Goris trying to steal second base.
Alfaro had more magic to offer in the top of the eighth inning off Missions reliever Brandon Alger (2-1). Gallo drew a one-out walk and Alfaro hit a go-ahead two-run blast to right field to once again put the Riders on top 8-6.
His huge night continued in the bottom of the eighth. Kyle Lotzkar walked Casey McElroy to lead off the inning but rebounded with a strike out of Jason Hagerty on a 3-2 pitch. McElroy was running on the play and Alfaro gunned him down to complete the strike'em out, throw'em out double play.
Gallo provided an imperative cushion with a two-run triple in the ninth inning, collecting his first two RBI of the season and putting the Riders on top 8-5.
The Missions sent six batters to the plate in the ninth inning managing one run on a Hunter Renfroe base hit, but Josh McElwee struck out Hagerty to record his second save and seal the 8-6 victory. With the win, Frisco snapped a six game losing streak dating back to April 20.
The Riders send Jake Thompson (1-2) to the mound for game two on Tuesday at 7:05 p.m. while the Missions counter with Bryan Rodriguez (0-3). The Riders return to Dr Pepper Ballpark on Tuesday, May 5 against San Antonio (Double-A, San Diego). It's another Taco Tuesday so fans can enjoy $2 tacos all game long, select $3 beers and half-price margaritas from 6-8 p.m. For tickets to see the Riders in 2015, call 972-731-9200, e-mail info@RidersBaseball.com or visit www.RidersBaseball.com.
