March 26, 2013 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Dubuque Fighting Saints News Release
DUBUQUE, Iowa- Dubuquers know them better than anyone, and on Friday, the Dubuque Fighting Saints plan to remind fans of the pests that invade The Key City each summer. The annual Fish Fly invasion is only months away, and the Fighting Saints are helping fans get prepared. The first 1,000 fans at Friday's 7:35 p.m. game versus the Indiana Ice receive a Fighting Saints Fish Fly Swatter perfect for Dubuquers for what we are calling "Good Fly Day" in honor of Friday's other event. The weekend fun continues Saturday with a Canned Food Drive presented by CenturyLink. Fans can receive $2 off a ticket courtesy of CenturyLink by helping support local food pantries with a non-perishable canned food item.
Friday's "Good Fly Day," is unique to Dubuque and ties in an annual event familiar to Dubuquers. The Fish Fly invasion occurs each summer, as these pests rise from the Mississippi River, annoyingly swarm the downtown area, then die within 24 hours, leaving the remains to be swept away.
To help Dubuquers combat the Fish Flies, the Fighting Saints are giving away Fish Fly Swatters to the first 1,000 fans Friday night. The swatters are red in color and feature the Fighting Saints logo. They are perfect to keep handy for that summer night to get a few swings in on the pests that plague Dubuque.
"Any team can give away a t-shirt," said Fighting Saints President Dan Lehv. "This is much more appropriate for Dubuquers. How is a bobblehead doll going to combat a fish fly -
Fish flies won't be the only "Fish" on the minds of Saints fans Friday. With many observing lent and eating only fish on Friday's, entertainment and promotions include a contest with fans tossing rubber fish, a "Fisch Frey" Trivia contest, featuring questions on Dubuque broadcaster Zack Fisch and Fighting Saints goalie Christian Frey, as well as FISCHer Lane Slingshot Bowling.
Friday's game is also an "In It to Win It," night where one lucky season ticket holder will win $100 for using their tickets to the game.
Saturday night, fans are invited to help a good cause and also receive a deal on admission courtesy of CenturyLink. The telecommunications company is providing fans that donate a canned food item $2 off per ticket to Saturday's 7:05 p.m. game against the Ice. The collected items will be donated to St. Stephen's Food Bank. The offer must be redeemed in person at the Fighting Saints box office, open 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday-Friday, and Saturday starting at 10 a.m. There is a limit of $2 off per ticket.
"Together, we can help address the issue of hunger faced by those in the Dubuque community," said Tim White, CenturyLink's vice president and general manager for Iowa. "We appreciate our friends and neighbors who will join with our employees in this worthwhile endeavor to improve the quality of life in the communities we serve."
Only three home games remain in the regular season for the Fighting Saints, who have clinched first place in the Eastern Conference. Fans may purchase tickets to both games this weekend in person at the Mystique Community Ice Center, by calling 563.583.6880, or online at DubuqueFightingSaints.com.
