March 26, 2013 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Waterloo Black Hawks News Release
Western Roadblocks
Two of the Waterloo Black Hawks' final three regular season games against opponents from the USHL Western Conference will be played at Young Arena this weekend. The Hawks meet the Tri-City Storm Friday and Fargo Force Saturday, hoping to improve on a conference mark which currently stands at 12-11-4. Much of the difficulty Waterloo has had is the result of games against Tri-City, Fargo, and the Des Moines Buccaneers, who visit for the final conference game of the season on April 7th. Collectively against those opponents, the Hawks are 2-6-3. High scores have been the trend versus Tri-City; the teams have combined to average nine goals per contest in their first four matchups. The games against Fargo have been generally close; three of four have been settled by one goal, with two ending in shootouts.
Defensemen Go Streaking
As a unit, Waterloo Black Hawks defensemen have a three-game goal streak. Victor Newell notched the lone Waterloo score against the Dubuque Fighting Saints Saturday after Mark Friedman had hit the net the night before during a tilt with Fargo. Ian McCoshen started the run on March 15th versus the Lincoln Stars. Black Hawks blue-liners have now scored 26 goals in 2012/13, three more than last season. McCoshen leads the corps with nine tallies after delivering eight in 2011/12.
Home Happenings
The Hawks are 0-3-1 during the past four games at Young Arena. The last time Waterloo was winless in four consecutive home games was a stretch between February 18th and March 11th, 2011, one of two such skids during the winter of 2010/11. The Black Hawks are still guaranteed to finish with no less than half of the home schedule in the win column, as they currently hold a 16-11-1 mark. The last victory in Party Town was a 6-4 decision against the Tri-City Storm on February 28th.
Close Ones Count
In games settled by one goal, Waterloo has the second-lowest winning percentage of any team currently holding a playoff position. The Hawks' results are fractionally better in close contests than the Dubuque Fighting Saints (61.9% versus 61.4%). Overall, Waterloo is 11-6-4 in one-goal games. During the last eight settled by a single marker, Waterloo is 2-2-4, with both victories coming against the Fighting Saints.
Weekly Recap
Despite two goals by Justin Kloos and a career-best 40 saves from Cal Petersen, the Fargo Force edged the Hawks 5-4 in a shootout Friday. Four unanswered goals pushed Dubuque to a 4-1 win at Young Arena Saturday. The Omaha Lancers were also 0-1-1 during last week, keeping the Hawks fourth in the conference.
