Frey Named CCM/ECHL Goaltender of the Week

April 10, 2018 - ECHL (ECHL) - Rapid City Rush News Release

(RAPID CITY, SD) - The Rapid City Rush, proud ECHL affiliate of the NHL's Minnesota Wild, are proud to announce, in conjunction with the ECHL, that rookie goaltender Christian Frey has been named the CCM/ECHL Goaltender of the Week for the week of April 2nd to April 8th. Frey becomes the second goaltender for the Rush to win the award this season, joining Adam Vay, who accomplished the feat back in January.

Frey put together the best week of his rookie season to close out the 2017-18 campaign for the Rush. The 5'10", 180-pound net-minder won all three of his starts last week against the Quad City Mallards and Tulsa Oilers, turning aside 148 of 157 shots faced in 185 minutes of hockey. His 185 minutes played was the second highest total among his ECHL counterparts, and his 148 saves and 157 shots were the highest in the league in that same time span.

Frey started off his week with a career-high 53 saves on 54 shots in a 4-1 win against the Mallards, then stopped an additional 52 of 54 in a 3-2 shootout win to start the weekend series against the Oilers. With 105 saves on 108 shots heading into Saturday, he made 43 saves on 49 shots in the wild 9-6 win over Tulsa to end the year.

Overall, Frey went 7-14-3 in 29 games with the Rush this season with a 3.59 GAA and a .898 SV%. Prior to turning pro, the Arlington, Texas native spent four years with Ohio State University in the NCAA, compiling a 36-34-11 record in 87 games with a 2.86 GAA, .913 SV%, and 3 shutouts to his credit. He also played in the USHL, winning the 2013 Clark Cup Championship with the Dubuque Fighting Saints.
