Frenzy conclude season
March 13, 2007 - American Basketball Association (ABA)
Cape Cod Frenzy News Release
Orleans, Massachusetts: The Cape Cod Frenzy concluded their third straight season in the American Basketball Association, and have elected not to participate in the playoffs. The Frenzy is one of only five franchises (Maryland, Atlanta, Tijuana and Fresno (now called Sacramento) are the others) that have completed each of the last three seasons in the ABA.
Cape Cod was originally assigned to play at Strong Island on Friday, but had been asked by the League to go to Buffalo on Tuesday (today). According to Frenzy GM Ian McCarthy this was not a possibility, "We just played back to back games this weekend, and drove through the night Sunday to Monday morning to get home, and we would've had to leave right away with no rest to make this new date. Further, we could not make travel arrangements that fast, and a few of our players were banged up during the Maryland games and had treatments booked on Tuesday and Wednesday. We were not going to jeopardize their health."
As a result Buffalo will receive a first round bye and have been assigned to travel to Jacksonville to play the Jam on Friday. The Jam has two former Buffalo players on their roster - guard Deron Rutledge and center Johnny Tyson.
The Frenzy, once a doormat of the ABA having gone 2-23 last season, improved by 8 games this season in a much tougher Blue-North Division. The Frenzy were also 0-11 against Vermont and Rochester this season, two of the league's toughest teams, and were competitive in most of those battles despite falling short.
The Frenzy boasted one of the ABA's top five players in 6'7 high flying forward Rob Sanders. Sanders was an ABA All Star, and was recently named the 12th best minor league player in the nation according to Probasketballnews.com.
"We are receiving inquiries from dozens of overseas teams regarding Sanders and other players. Now that our season is officially over, we looking to help our guys continue playing elsewhere," explained McCarthy. Team representatives or agents are encouraged to contact Ian McCarthy at ian@capecodfrenzy.com or 508-889-3275.
Note: OurSports Central no longer actively covers the American Basketball Association (ABA) as a professional league due in part to its inability to publish and play a schedule and the transitory nature of many of its teams.
