Freire's grand slam leads Lynx to 9-4 Canada Day win

Alejandro Freire's grand slam was the key blow in a five-run seventh inning, as the Ottawa Lynx defeated the Indianapolis Indians by the score of 9-4 on Canada Day. Every Lynx starter had a hit to key the 13-hit attack, which included homers by Midre Cummings and Napoleon Calzado. RHP Andy Mitchell improved his record to 6-0 by throwing 5.1 innings of relief for the Lynx. 3,580 Canada Day fans were in attendance to cheer on the Lynx.

Ottawa's record improves to 40-40. The Lynx hit the road for a six game road trip featuring two-day stops in Buffalo, Scranton, and Pawtucket before the Lynx return home for a three game series against Scranton starting July 8th.

Player of the Game: Lynx 1B Alejandro Freire and RHP Andy Mitchell share the honors, with Freire hitting a grand slam and Mitchell pitching 5.1 innings of great relief.

Key Plays: With Ottawa leading 5-3 in the 7th inning, Freire blasted the first pitch from Indy reliever Brian Mallette over the left field wall for Ottawa's first grand slam of the year.

Recap: Indianapolis jumped out to an early lead, as Ty Wigginton homered off of Lynx starter Brian McNichol to put the Indians up 2-0. Ottawa responded quickly in the bottom half of the inning. Bernie Castro walked and was forced at second on a Tim Raines Jr. groundout. Midre Cummings then followed Raines Jr. by blasting his 9th homer of the year to right, evening the score at 2-2. A Napoleon Calzado homer to left (his 8th of the year) in the third put the Lynx up 3-2. The teams would trade runs in the 6th inning, with Ottawa's run coming when Walter Young scored from second on Eli Whiteside's single to center. Up 4-3, the Lynx broke open the game in the 7th. Ed Rogers and Bernie Castro led of the inning with back-to-back singles, and Rogers would score when Tim Raines Jr. doubled to left. After an intentional walk to Midre Cummings loaded the bases, Alejandro Freire greeted Indy reliever Brian Mallette's first pitch with a line drive grand slam homer to left, putting Ottawa up 9-3. The grand slam was the first by the Lynx since May 4th, 2004 when Geronimo Gil did the deed in Pawtucket. The Indians would score a run in the 9th, but it was not nearly enough in a 9-4 Lynx win. RHP Andy Mitchell picked up his 6th victory against no defeats in the game, tying John Maine for the team lead in wins.

Next Game: The Lynx head to Buffalo for the first game of a two-game set with the Bisons. First pitch of tomorrow's game is 7:05 pm.
