Down East Wood Ducks News Release
Lynchburg, Va. - Tied 2-2 in the bottom of the tenth inning, Tyler Freeman lined a game-winning single into right-center, scoring Steven Kwan, and lifting the Hillcats to a 3-2 win over the Wood Ducks, Saturday.
The Wood Ducks (6-4, 56-24) fall for just the second time in extra-innings this year, and see their five-game winning streak come to a close.
Lynchburg (5-5, 37-40) opened the scoring against Reid Anderson in the second. With Will Benson at second and two out, Jodd Carter beat out an infield single, and Benson kept on running around third and came into score to put the Hillcats ahead, 1-0.
Anderson worked four innings, allowing one run on three hits, he walked two, and struck out five.
Down East answered against Cody Morris in the fourth. With one out, Yohel Pozo and Curtis Terry lined back-to-back doubles, to knot the score at 1-1. Terry also walked and singled, reaching three times in the ballgame.
Morris worked five innings, giving up a run on four hits, he walked one, and struck out seven, in his second Carolina League start.
Lynchburg would go back in front in the fifth inning. Wes Robertson took over for Anderson, and on his first batter faced, Carter launched a solo home run to left field, his ninth of the year, to make it a 2-1 Hillcats lead.
Down East would battle back to tie again in the eighth. Sam Huff walked to lead off the inning, and then Diosbel Arias singled to right-center, and advanced to second on a throwing error. Josh Altmann then grounded to third, and Nolan Jones threw home to cut down Huff at the plate. With runners at the corners, Pozo lifted a sac fly to right field, scoring Arias to tie the score at 2-2. Arias reached base safely for the 28th consecutive game.
Cole Uvila worked three scoreless innings in relief for the Wood Ducks, striking out three, and sending the ballgame to extra-innings.
The Wood Ducks went in order in the tenth inning against Dakody Clemmer (win, 3-1), who worked 2.2 innings scoreless in relief.
In the bottom of the tenth, Down East turned to infielder Tyler Depreta-Johnson (loss, 0-1) to make his second pitching outing of the year. He intentionally walked Tyler Friis to put runners at first and second, and then got Oscar Gonzalez to bounce into a double-play. With Kwan at third and two outs, Freeman came through with the walk-off winner, handing Down East their third walk-off loss of the season.
The Wood Ducks go for a series win in the finale on Sunday at 3 p.m. when they send right-hander Collin Wiles (1-0, 3.60) to the hill to face off with lefty Kirk McCarty (0-2, 7.00). The pregame show will begin at 2:50 p.m. on 960AM The Bull, and online at 960thebull.com as well as on the MiLB First Pitch and TuneIn Radio Apps.
