Florence Y'alls News Release
Florence, Ky. - Two-out hitting and strong pitching down the stretch sent the Florence Freedom, presented by Titan Mechanical Solutions, to a 5-3 victory over the Gateway Grizzlies.
Florence (41-48) knocked around all six of their hits with two outs, while Freedom pitching totaled 11 strikeouts, including the final six Gateway (42-46) batters of the game.
The Freedom found the scoreboard first, plating a run with two-out hitting in the second. Shaun Cooper ripped a double to the wall in left and Josh Henderson singled him home with a grounder back up the middle.
Gateway took the lead in the third with the help of a pair of Freedom errors. With two men on and nobody out, Eric Ferguson scored from second on an arid throw. Then Josh Benselmeyer lifted a sacrifice fly to left, giving Gateway a 2-1 advantage.
Florence answered in the fourth to retake the lead. Collins Cuthrell walked and moved to third when Gateway starter Corey Kimes' throw on a potential double play ball ended up in centerfield. Cuthrell came home on a Henderson groundout and then Cooper crossed the plate on Isaac Wenrich's second two-out hit, which gave the Freedom a 3-2 lead.
Florence extended its advantage to two by scoring a run without a hit in the fifth. Daniel Fraga led off the inning with a walk and then he swiped second. The next batter, Taylor Oldham, bounced a ball up the middle and the fielder tried to tag out Fraga, but everyone was safe. A flyout moved Fraga to third and he scored on a groundout from Austin Newell.
The Freedom plated another run without a hit in the sixth. A walk and a hit batter put Cooper on second and Henderson on first with nobody out. Both moved up on a groundout and Cooper came home on a wild pitch.
After allowing a couple of runs in the third inning, Torres-Perez stayed strong in his last three frames, stranding the bases loaded in the fourth and six total base runners in his six-inning outing. He struck out five, while allowing three runs (two earned) on five hits and four walks. Another run came in on his credit in the seventh with Pete Levitt in the ballgame.
TJ Bozeman allowed a couple of walks in the eighth, which put the tying run on base with nobody out, but Patrick McGrath continued his dominance as a reliever this season by striking out the side to end the threat. After McGrath caught Cody Livesay looking for the first out of the ninth, Ethan Gibbons earned his 13th save by striking out both batters that he faced.
Cooper scored three runs for the Freedom, while Henderson drove in two and Wenrich had three hits. The Freedom stayed a perfect 6-0 when Torres-Perez pitches.
Five different Gateway players recorded hits and Benselmeyer had two RBIs. Kimes allowed all five runs (three earned) in taking the loss.
The Freedom go for the sweep tomorrow in a 6:05 p.m. first pitch. Florence's Jeremy Gooding (7-6, 4.05 ERA) will matchup against Will Landsheft (6-7, 4.09 ERA). For more information on the promotions this weekend, including Superhero Night tomorrow, click here.
