Freedom fall short in Grogan's return

Florence Y'alls News Release

TRAVERSE CITY, MI - Even the return of Tim Grogan could not spark the Florence Freedom as they ran into a solid pitching performance by Kevin Reese and the Traverse City Beach Bums in a 3-1 loss Monday night.

Grogan had been sidelined since June 5 with a pulled hamstring and went 2-4 in his return, but with just five other hits from his teammates, Florence fell short after taking game one of the series 9-5 on Sunday.

Reese (4-1) took a 3-0 lead with him into the sixth before Erold Andrus scored all the way from first on Ryan Basham's RBI double to left-center. Basham's two bagger was the only extra base hit all night for the Freedom.

Andy Clark had another solid start for the Freedom. The right-hander was sharp through the first three innings as he faced the minimum. Traverse City put up a two spot in the fourth after a lead-off single and hit by pitch eventually came in to score.

Clark (2-2) was touched up for an unearned run in the fifth inning as he went six innings with five strikeouts in the loss.

The Beach Bums bullpen combined to go the final three innings, striking out four with Jeff Williams notching his eighth save of the season with a 1-2-3 ninth.

The Freedom (16-13) wrap up their six game road trip, which they have gone 1-4, on Tuesday night against the Beach Bums (15-14). First pitch is at 7:05 p.m. and can be heard on Classic Country 106.7 WNKR. Baron Short (1-1, 4. 85 ERA) goes for Florence.
