The Florence Freedom selected Pitcher Trey Porras, Corey Deighan and Dewayne Boyd in the 2013 Frontier League Draft, held at GCS Ballpark, home of the Gateway Grizzlies. The players will join the Freedom for spring training set to start this week on Thursday.
The 24-year old Porras, the Freedom's first round pick, is a left-handed hitting first baseman from the University of New Mexico. The Needville, Texas. native was selected as an All-Mountain West second team performer as a senior in 2012, hitting a career-high .325 with eight doubles and 35 RBI. The slick fielder posted a .989 fielding percentage and made just four errors all season while collecting 19 multi-hit games. Porras began his collegiate career at Wharton (Tx.) Junior College where he was named an Academic All-American and was named the school's Most Outstanding Athlete in 2010, leading the team in batting average and RBI.
Second round pick Deighan, a right-handed pitcher, joins the Freedom following his collegiate career at Charleston Southern University. Deighan, 24, appeared in 29 games as a senior in 2012, posting a 3-4 record with a 3.35 ERA and a team-high six saves. The Jacksonville, Florida native also recorded a team-high in saves during the 2011 campaign with seven, one short of the single-season school record.
With its third round pick, the Freedom selected Boyd, a catcher out of Bryan College in Tennessee. The right-handed hitting Boyd finished eleventh in the Appalachian Athletic Conference in home runs as a senior in 2012, hitting 10 round-trippers to go with a .305 batting average and 40 RBI. The Gadsden, Alabama native threw out 34 percent of would-be base stealers in 2012 while not committing an error behind the plate.
Porras, Deighan and Boyd represent three of the 43 players taken in this year's draft, selected from a pool of more than 400 players from across the country and around the world who participated in the Frontier League Tryout Camp.
The Freedom open the season Thursday, May 16 at UC Medical Center Stadium against the River City Rascals with first pitch at 6:35.
