Washington Wild Things News Release

On Monday night, the Washington Wild Things, presented by Washington Financial, saw Vidal Nuno become the first former Wild Things player to play Major League baseball. The left-handed pitcher debuted with the New York Yankees, pitching three scoreless innings of relief against the Houston Astros.

Nuno, 25, was summoned from the Yankee Stadium bullpen in the seventh inning. During his outing, he scattered four hits, struck out two, and did not walk a batter. In the eighth, Nuno faced a bit of trouble with runners on the corners and nobody out. However, he fanned cleanup hitter Chris Carter and also struck out former all-star Carlos Pena. He was able induce a fly ball from Ronny Cedeno to end the inning unscathed.

Nuno played for Washington just two seasons ago, starting six games for then-manager Darin Everson. During his tenure as a Wild Thing, Nuno posted a 2-3 record, with a 2.83 ERA. His strong performances on the mound led to his acquisition by the Yankees in the early part of 2011. He subsequently tore through the minor leagues, posting stellar numbers at every level. Beginning this season in Class AAA, he went 2-0, striking out 26 in just 23 1/3 innings. When Yankees starter Ivan Nova went on the DL this past weekend, Nuno was recalled from Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

Nuno is the first former Washington player to play in a major league game, but second to appear on a major league roster. Tom Cochran, another left-handed pitcher, pitched for Washington during 2006 and 2007. He was called up to the Cincinnati Reds in 2011, but was sent back to the minors without appearing in a game. Cochran is currently with Class AA Reading, an affiliate of the Philadelphia Phillies. Counting Nuno's appearance Monday night, twenty four Frontier League alumni have now reached the Major Leagues.

The Washington Wild Things begin their season on May 17, with the home opener scheduled for Friday, May 24. For tickets, contact the box office at (724) 250-9555, or visit www.washingtonwildthings.com.
