Frederick Keys News Release
Multiple times the Keys came to the brink of knotting their contest with Winston-Salem only to fall short. In a thrilling Wednesday evening duel at BB&T Ballpark the Keys were left wondering what could have been after a 7-6 defeat.
Frederick left the tying runner at third base in each of the last three innings.
The Keys led early getting three consecutive two-out hits to grab the lead at 1-0 in the first inning. In the second frame it was SS Garabez Rosa doubling home a second run. Up 2-1 in the third inning the Keys struck again. C Justin Dalles hit his first home run of the season, a line drive blast over the wall in left field.
But the power of the Dash would answer. Winston-Salem tied the game with a Brady Shoemaker 2-run home run in the third inning and then grabbed the lead in the fifth. CF Trayce Thompson hit a tape measure three-run home run to left field to put Winston-Salem on top 6-3.
As they did a night ago the Keys would battle back. After a dropped fly ball allowed a run to score in the sixth inning, the Keys got another back in the seventh. 3B Ty Kelly, who has a whopping ten hits in the series, singled and then scored on a rocketed triple to the right-center field alley way off of the bat of 1B Aaron Baker. Down 6-5 with a runner at third base and one out the Keys could not get Baker home.
An inning later it was Dalles who doubled to lead off the frame. After a sac bunt from 2B Bobby Stevens moved the runner to third base, the Dash slipped out of another jam.
Winston-Salem added a critical insurance run in the eighth inning as RF Michael Early singled and with two down got around to third base on an errant pickoff throw from RHP Clay Schrader. A wild pitch would plate Earley who scored on a bang-bang play at the plate.
The Keys down 7-5 were not done yet. RF Jeremy Nowak singled past a sliding infielder into right field to lead off the ninth inning. Kelly then doubled to left field moving Nowak to third base. But after a shallow fly-out, a groudball scored a run but left Kelly at third base representing the tying run. A swinging strikeout would end the game leaving the Keys wondering what could have been.
Frederick finishes its series in Winston-Salem Thursday, May 31st at 7:00 p.m. with coverage beginning 20-minutes prior on 1450-AM The Source and wthu.org.
The Keys head home Monday, June 4th for Bark in the Park presented by Crossroads Animal Referral and Emergency. Game time 7:00 p.m. against the Potomac Nationals. For tickets contact the Keys Box Office at 301-815-9939 or purchase online at frederickkeys.com.
