Frederick Keys News Release
In front of a packed house at Historic Grainger Stadium, the Kinston Indians held on to defeat the Keys, 3-2, and avoid a three-game sweep. Facing closer Preston Guilmet in the ninth inning, Frederick plated a run and had the winning run on base when 2B Jonathan Schoop lined out to RF Abner Abreu to end the game. The Keys ended their six-game road trip with a 4-2 mark.
With the game scoreless in the third inning, 1B Jacob Julius stepped to the plate against his former college teammate, RHP Marty Popham. Julius belted a Popham pitch to right-center for a solo home run. Julius' sixth homer of the season put the Keys on top, 1-0.
The Keys lead was short lived as Kinston scored two runs in the home half of the third. RF Abner Abreu led off the bottom of the third with a triple down the left field line. C Roberto Perez followed Abreu with a RBI single off the left field wall. RHP Ryohei Tanaka surrendered his third consecutive hit when CF Delvi Cid singled to left. Perez and Cid each advanced a base after Tanaka uncorked a wild pitch. LF Tyler Holt put the K-Tribe in front when he brought home Roberto Perez on a sac fly to center.
Neither starter allowed another run on the night as the game remained 2-1 entering the eighth.
Marty Popham last for six innings on Monday allowing one run on four hits. Ryohei Tanaka surrendered two runs on seven hits over a season-high 6 1/3 innings of work.
Kinston added a big insurance run in the bottom of the eighth inning. SS Casey Frawley hit the first pitch he saw from LHP Jason Gurka over the left field fence. Frawley's solo blast put the K-Tribe in front, 3-1.
The Keys made things interesting in the top of the ninth. Preston Guilmet retired the first two batters of the ninth and got two strikes on Jacob Julius. Julius lined a two-strike pitch to the right side of the infield. SS Casey Frawley dove but could not come up with the catch. Julius hustled into a second with an unlikely double. DH Justin Dalles singled Julius home on a bloop that dropped in shallow right field. RF Steve Bumbry came to the plate as the go-ahead run and singled into left field. With pinch runner Bobby Stevens at second and Bumbry at first, 2B Jonathan Schoop stung a ball to right field but it was right at Abner Abreu. Abreu made the catch and secured the Kinston victory.
Popham picked up the win on the fourth of the July and improved to 2-0 on the season. Ryohei Tanaka dropped to 5-2 on the season while Preston Guilmet notched save number 20 in 2011.
After a day off on Tuesday, the Keys return to Harry Grove Stadium for the start of a six-game homestand on Wednesday night. LHP Nick Haughian (5-4, 3.99) will get the start for game one against the Potomac Nationals while the P-Nats will turn to RHP Paul Demny (5-7, 3.75). First pitch from Harry Grove Stadium is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
Wednesday night is Peanut Free night at Harry Grove Stadium presented by Frederick Allergy and Asthma Center. For tickets, call the Keys Box Office at 1-877-8-GO-KEYS or purchase online at www.frederickkeys.com.
