Frederick Keys News Release
The Keys led the Blue Rocks by three runs entering the bottom of eighth inning on Wednesday but Wilmington mounted an impressive comeback. The Rocks scored three runs in the eighth to tie the game and CF Yam Prades scored the winning run following a wild pitch by RHP Sean Gleason. In the losing effort, RHP Oliver Drake struck out a season-high 10 batters. Frederick now sits at 24-21 on the season and is four games behind the Blue Rocks in the Northern Division of the Carolina League.
Lewes, Delaware native, 1B Tyler Townsend, got the Keys on the board in the first inning with a RBI single to right field. Townsend finished the afternoon 4-for-4 and upped his batting average to a team-best, .309.
Frederick scored an unearned run in the third, two runs in the fifth, and another run in the sixth as they led by three runs after six innings.
Entering the bottom of the eighth inning, Oliver Drake remained on the hill for the Keys as they led by three. Following a one-out RBI infield single by C Jose Bonilla, Drake was relieved by Keys closer, RHP Sean Gleason. Gleason struggled as he allowed a single to DH Whit Merrifield, RBI ground rule double to RF Carlo Testa, and intentionally walked 2B Rey Navarro to load the bases. With the Keys leading by a run, 3B John Whittleman tied the game up with a sacrifice fly to centerfield.
LHP Brendan Lafferty tossed a scoreless top of the ninth as the game was nodded at five heading to the bottom of the inning. CF Yam Prades led off the inning for the Blue Rocks and he grounded a ball down the third-base line for a double. After sac bunt by LF Tim Ferguson advanced Prades to third, SS Alex McClure stepped to the plate with the winning run 90 feet away. From the stretch, Gleason attempted to throw a pitchout to C Brian Ward but Gleason's pitch went to the right of Ward. The wild pitch scored Prades and ended the ballgame.
Gleason fell to 1-2 on the season while Brendan Lafferty improved to 1-1. Oliver Drake got a no-decision after he allowed four runs on five hits and struck out 10. 2B Bobby Stevens went 3-for-5 with a double, RBI, and two runs scored in defeat.
After an off day on Thursday, the Keys will head to Salem, VA for the weekend. On Friday evening, Frederick and Salem will play a doubleheader starting at 5:30 p.m. In game one, RHP Bobby Bundy (4-3, 2.42) gets the nod for the Keys while Red Sox will turn to RHP Junichi Tazawa. In the night cap, LHP Nick Haughian (1-2, 4.94) will start for Frederick and RHP Pete Ruiz will go for Salem.
The Keys return home on Memorial Day, May 30th with a 4:00 p.m. start against the Myrtle Beach Pelicans. For tickets contact the Keys Box Office at 1-877-8-GO-KEYS or purchase online at frederickkeys.com.
