Edenton Steamers News Release
EDENTON, N.C - Dominic Fratantuono hit a grand slam, Adam Kirsch drove in three and David St.
Lawrence pitched six innings of one-run baseball as the Edenton Steamers (8-4) defeated the Gastonia Grizzlies (4-5) 7-1 on Tuesday Night at Historic Hicks Field.
David St. Lawrence (Brown University) made his second start and third appearance for the Steamers, while Josh Peterson was also making his second appearance for the Grizzlies.
After St. Lawrence faced four batters in the top of the first inning, Edenton's offense wasted no time jumping on Peterson in the home half of the first. With one out, Peterson issued back-to-back walks to Laz Villa (Reedley College) and Nick Miller (University of Northern Colorado). Adam Kirsch (Texas Tech University) followed with his Coastal Plain League leading eighth double of the season, driving in both runners and giving Edenton a 2-0 lead.
2-0 remained the score until the top of the fourth. St. Lawrence had retired nine straight Grizzlies until Austen Colt hit a long home run to make it a 2-1 Steamer lead.
Through four complete innings, each pitcher had only allowed two hits apiece. Peterson, however, would not make it out of the fifth inning. With two outs, Peterson walked two batters in a row and then Josh Hampton (Wilmington University) reached on an error to load the bases. Peterson then walked Kirsch, driving in a run and giving Kirsch his third RBI of the game. That was the end of the night for Peterson and into the game came Craig Pearcy.
Dominic Fratantuono (Towson University) came up against Pearcy and hit a grand slam, making it 7-1 Steamers.
St. Lawrence pitched six innings and allowed three hits and one run; he walked one and struck out four, earning his second win of the season.
Jeremy Bales (Lee University) made his first appearance and pitched a scoreless seventh followed by a scoreless inning by Beau Beaudreau (Flagler College) and Andrew Nelson (St. Catharine College) to seal the win.
Peterson, for Gastonia, pitched four and two-thirds innings and gave up six runs (two earned), walking seven and striking out four in the loss.
Edenton improves to 8-4 and he win is Edenton's fourth in a row. The Steamers welcome in the Peninsula Pilots tomorrow night; first pitch at 7 pm.

The CPL gives college players the chance to refine their skills with the use of wooden bats. Players are housed with local host families for the summer and past experiences have been very positive for both players and hosts. Furthermore, the CPL has had over 1,000 alumni drafted and 63 alums - including 2011 AL MVP and Cy Young winner Justin Verlander - make their Major League debut thus far.
