For the second time in five days Alexander Francisco shut down the Calgary Vipers as they were defeated 8-0 by the Edmonton Capitals before 2327 fans at Telus Field in Edmonton, Alberta. Francisco (6-0) who beat the Vipers on Saturday was once again brilliant throwing eight scoreless innings while striking out six for the victory. With the loss the Snakes fall to 10-3 on the second half but remain in first place in the North Division. Overall Calgary's record is now 33-23 on the Golden Baseball League season.
Reggie Rivard (2-1) lasted five innings and took the loss for Calgary while the bullpen was solid for a second straight night as Daniel Morari, Jason Norderum, and Jordan Muir all threw scoreless frames.
Edmonton scored first in a big way in the third inning as Alex Prieto walked, Josh Tarnow singled, Ryan Stevenson reached on a strikeout and passed ball which also allowed Prieto to score, Enrique Cruz reached on a fielding error to drive in a run, and Larry Bigbie hit a three-run homer for a 5-0 advantage.
The Capitals added to their lead in the sixth frame when Matt Rogelstad and Prieto walked, Tarnow doubled home two, and Bigbie drove in one with a single for a 8-0 score.
Calgary will be holding a media conference at Foothills Stadium for female knuckleballer Eri Yoshida on Friday July 30th at 4:00 PM MDT.
The Vipers return home to Calgary and Foothills Stadium for a three-game series with the first half champion Chico Outlaws on Friday July 30th at 7:05 PM for Girls Night, Saturday July 31st at 1:35 PM for Protect and Serve Day, and Sunday August 1st at 1:35 PM for 9 Inning Giveaway Day where Eri Yoshida will take to the mound.
