
Fourth Quarter Rally Halts Charge Streak

The Canton Charge (12-12), presented by SecureData 365 and powered by the Cleveland Cavaliers, were defeated by the Sioux Falls Skyforce (21-4), 99-94, at the Canton Memorial Civic Center on Saturday night. The loss halts Canton's franchise record tying win streak at seven, while the Skyforce added a win to their D-League best record.
Trailing 89-80 with 5:23 to play, Sioux Falls held Canton scoreless over a span of 3:45 on a 13-0 run to pull ahead 93-91. The run proved to be the difference maker in the game after the Charge led by as many as 14. Sioux Falls hit 13-of-19 shots in the fourth (68%) in outscoring Canton 33-20.
Six Skyforce players scored in double digits, led by Bubu Palo's 19 points and eight rebounds in 41 minutes. Keith Benson posted a double-double of 18 points and 12 boards, while Byron Mullens added a double-double of 11 points and 12 rebounds with two blocks. Sioux Falls outrebounded Canton 52-37 in the game and outscored the hosts 60-44 in the paint.
Nick Minnerath paced Canton with 20 points and nine rebounds for his ninth game of 20+ scoring so far this season. Jorge Gutierrez added 16 points, seven assists, and two steals in 32 minutes. Quinn Cook scored 14 points and nabbed two steals in 37 minutes. Both teams combined for 54 fouls and 63 free throw attempts in the contest.
The two teams traded blows throughout the opening period with 10 lead changes and four ties to begin the game. Sioux Falls got inside for 16 points in the paint in the first, and took a 26-25 lead after the opening 12 minutes when Jabril Trawick followed his own miss with a putback layup at the buzzer.
With the game tied 31-31 early in the second, the Charge rolled off a 10-1 run that included five of Minnerath's 10 points in the quarter to take a 41-32 lead. Canton took advantage of high-percentage opportunities in the second with 18 points in the paint and hitting 11-of-19 shots in the second overall (58%) while limiting the visitors to 6-of-20 as a unit (30%). The hosts held on to a 55-45 advantage at intermission.
The Charge led the entire third quarter, but Sioux Falls' starting unit helped lessen the deficit by scoring all 21 of their team's points. The Skyforce outscored Canton in the paint 36-16 in the second half and 60-44 overall in the game.
Canton begins a six-game road trip on Tuesday, January 26th with an early 11:00 a.m. game at the Delaware 87ers (Philadelphia 76ers affiliate). The Charge return home to the Civic Center on Tuesday, February 9th at 7:00 p.m. against the Grand Rapids Drive (Detroit Pistons affiliate).
