Chicago Sky News Release
CHICAGO - The WNBA announced Monday that Elena Delle Donne has earned her fourth Eastern Conference Player of the Week Award. Delle Donne now owns the honors for the weeks of June 24-30, July 2-7, August 5-11 and August 19- 25.
The rookie averaged 20 points, 6.3 rebounds, 1.0 block and 1.7 assists during the Sky's three games over the course of the week. In her first game back after suffering a mid-foot sprain, which left her sidelined for two games, Delle Donne scored a game high 24 points against the third ranked Washington Mystics, leading the Sky to a 79-73 victory. She also pulled down eight rebounds, offered three assists and blocked one shot.
The most exciting moment of the week took place at Allstate Arena on August 23 as the Sky took on the New York Liberty. Delle Donne's 11 points and season high of two steals helped the Sky defeat the Liberty (82-64) to capture the franchise's first playoff berth in history.
Delle Donne went back at it in the second of the Sky's back-to-back games. Scoring a game high 25 points with 100% accuracy past the three point line (2-for-2), Delle Donne led the team to a win over the second ranked Atlanta Dream. Her efforts helped the Sky hand the Dream their second home loss and lowest scoring game of the season. Delle Donne's eight rebounds also assisted the Sky in tying their season high of 46 rebounds in a single game.
Her 20-plus point performance against Atlanta is her 12th of the season. She is now tied for eighth all-time in the league in 20-plus point games by a rookie alongside Chamique Holdsclaw (1999). Delle Donne tops the league in free throw percentage (91.3%) and three-point percentage (48.7%). She also ranks third overall and is the first rookie in points per game with an average 18.4. Delle Donne sits fifth in blocks per game (1.79).
Other candidates for WNBA Players of the Week were Dream's Erika de Souza, Sky's Sylvia Fowles, Fever's Tamika Catchings and Liberty's Plenette Pierson in the East, and Sparks' Candace Parker and Nneka Ogwumike, Mercury's Diana Taurasi, Silver Stars' Shenise Johnson and Shock's Elizabeth Cambage in the West. Minnesota Lynx's Maya Moore was named Western Conference Player of the Week.
