Fayetteville Marksmen News Release
[FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.] - The Fayetteville FireAntz of the Southern Professional Hockey League (SPHL) announced today the retirement of defenseman Mike Fournier. He has enlisted in the United States Air Force and is currently stationed in Texas.
Fournier, 24, was a member of the FireAntz in each of the club's first four years of existence. He also holds the franchise record for games played (160) and penalty minutes (491). During Fournier's tenure with the FireAntz, the club reached the playoffs three times in four years.
"My time in Fayetteville was the best hockey experience of my entire life." Fournier said, "I can't say enough about the fans and the support from the staff. The whole experience has helped me develop into the person that I am today."
Fournier, the club's captain for the past two seasons, used that experience as training for his service in the Air Force. He was an element leader through basic training and retains that responsibility to this day.
"This has been a decision three years in the making." Fournier added, "This was the right decision for me at this point in my life. I'm looking forward to the opportunities that lie ahead."
Fournier is scheduled to return to Fayetteville in December and the FireAntz are planning to honor their former captain on Saturday, December 30th at their home game against the Jacksonville Barracudas.
"Mike has been a true asset to the FireAntz organization and we are very proud of him." MacNaught said, "He is an outstanding young man and will be a great benefit to the United States Air Force."
The FireAntz begin their 5th Anniversary Season, their first without Fournier, on October 27th, at 7:35pm at the Crown Coliseum, against the expansion Richmond Renegades.
