Barracudas sign key defenseman
August 18, 2006 - SPHL (SPHL)
Jacksonville Barracudas News Release
The Jacksonville Barracudas announce that they have signed defenseman Derek McKinlay. McKinlay comes to the Barracudas after playing for the Central Hockey League's Memphis Riverkings where he earned 5 assists in 42 games for the 2005-06 season.
Head Coach Rick Allain likes what the 6'1'', 200-pound Canadian offers the Barracudas.
"McKinlay has proven himself as a solid defenseman at this level, said Allain. "I look forward to him being one of our leaders on defense."
After playing in both the Western Hockey League and Ontario Hockey League in junior, McKinlay found a professional home in the Central Hockey League from 2001 until 2003. Derek made his debut in the SPHL for the 2004-05 season when he joined the Huntsville Havoc. During his time with the team McKinlay had 5 goals and 16 assists, for a total of 21 points in 70 games played. After a short stint with the CHL's Riverkings, the right-handed shooter returns to the SPHL and joins the Barracudas for the start of the 2006-07 season.
The Barracudas have also added to the list of players coming to training camp in October, including two players who played for the team in the 2005-2006 season. Defenseman Shane Wagner and Matt Meacham will be back for camp, along with newcomer's defenseman Kurt Walsten, goaltender Jamie Tompkins and forward Josh McNair.
