Four United Players Called to U.S. U-23 Camp

CHANTILLY, VA (December 8, 2003) – Four D.C. United players have been called up by U.S. U-23 Head Coach Glenn "Mooch" Myernick to participate in a training camp at the Home Depot Center in Carson, California from December 12-19 in advance of vital Olympic Qualifying matches scheduled for February 2004. Goalkeeper Doug Warren, defender David Stokes, midfielder Brian Carroll and forward Alecko Eskandarian are included in the 19-man squad that will train concurrently with the U.S. Men's National Team.

"We are proud of these four players and their continued progress towards finding roster spots with the United States Olympic team," said United Technical Director Dave Kasper.

All four players recently participated in the last U-23 camp and a pair of Olympic Qualifying games that sent the U.S. team through to the final round of qualifying that will be held in Guadalajara, Mexico from February 2-12, 2004. The U.S. is set to face Panama (Feb. 3), Canada (Feb. 5), and Honduras (Feb. 7) in the opening stage of the final qualifying tournament. The two teams that make it to the final of that competition earn Olympic berths to Athens 2004.

Warren kept a clean sheet in the U-23's last match, a 4-0 home win over St. Kitts and Nevis. A product of Clemson University, Warren stepped in to be United's starting goalkeeper after Nick Rimando went down with a knee injury on September 25th. He helped D.C. to make the playoffs for the first time since 1999.

Eskandarian also recently completed his rookie season, making 23 appearances for the Black-and-Red, totaling eight points on three goals and two assists. He netted a goal in the first leg match against St. Kitts and Nevis and started in the second leg, though he was unable to get on the score sheet. Eskandarian was the first overall pick of the 2003 MLS SuperDraft.

Stokes and Carroll saw action for United during a U.S. Open Cup run that ended in the semifinal round and performed well while on assignments to A-League clubs (Stokes at Hampton Roads and Carroll at Richmond) and during regular appearances with the U.S. U-23 side, including the St. Kitts and Nevis playoff.
