Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release
GARY, Ind. - A four-run bottom of the sixth and three shutout innings of relief from Lars Liguori paced the Gary SouthShore RailCats to a 6-3 win over the Chicago Dogs on Tuesday evening. The win was Gary's fourth consecutive and was Chicago's ninth straight defeat.
Gary (6-5) ended the scoreless drought with an unearned run in the fourth. Colin Willis drew a leadoff walk before Garrett Copeland hit a grounder into the hole on the right side of the infield. Chicago infielder Christian Arroyo gloved it, however, threw the ball into left field after trying to get the force out at second, allowing Willis to advance to third and Copeland to take second. Two batters later, Reggie Wilson lofted a fly ball to center field for a sacrifice fly, bringing home Willis for the first run of the game.
Chicago (1-10) took their first lead of the series with two runs on three straight hits to open the top of the sixth. Arroyo led off the inning with a triple to right-center before Treysen Vavra doubled him home with an RBI double to left-center for his second hit. Former RailCat Craig Maddox followed Vavra with an RBI single to center, plating Vavra.
The 'Cats quickly responded with four runs in the bottom of the sixth to go in front, 5-2. With the bases loaded and one out, D.K. delivered a bases-clearing double to left-center, giving Gary a 4-2 advantage. Three hitters later, a two-out Michael Baca throwing error on an Andy De Jesus infield single allowed Carey to score the final run of the inning.
Gary added their final run with two outs again in the seventh. With Willis on third, Wilson hit a grounder to Baca behind second base, however, the throw took Chicago first baseman Vavra off the bag, allowing Gary to score their third unearned run of the game.
The Dogs scored the final run of the night in the ninth. Baca drew a leadoff walk off Jack Fowler before pinch-hitter Ryan Gyrion struck out for the first out. Jonathan Maroney then singled to center in his first game off the Disabled List, giving Chicago runners on first and second. Gabe Perez then relieved Fowler and allowed both baserunners to move up 90 feet on a wild pitch before Arroyo brought in Baca with an RBI groundout to second. Perez (2) got Vavra to line out to left to end the game for the two-out save.
Liguori (1-0) recorded the win with three scoreless innings, extending his consecutive scoreless innings streak to seven. Chuck Weaver went 5+ innings in a no-decision in his third start. The New Haven, Ind., native yielded two runs on five hits and three walks while striking out a season-best seven.
John Goossen-Brown (0-1) was charged with the loss for Chicago. The right-hander allowed three runs (two earned) on three hits and four walks while striking out three over 5+ innings.
