New Jersey Jackals News Release

MA - The New Jersey Jackals committed four errors, falling to the Brockton Rox 5-4 in 12 innings on Sunday afternoon at Campanelli Stadium. The Jackals fourth four-error game of the season helped the Rox avoid a sweep in the three-game series.

With the score tied 4-4 entering the 12th inning, Jackals reliever Hunter Davis retired the first batter he faced before allowing a single to catcher Josh Vander Hey. The next batter, center fielder Ervin Alcantara, hit a ball back to the mound that ricocched off Davis. Davis then delivered a poor throw to second in an attempt to force out Vander Hey, which enabled the catcher to advance to third. After an intentional walk loaded the bases, Rox designated hitter Jud Thigpen lifted a fly ball to center field which chased a drawn-in Zack Smithlin back, enabling Vander Hey to cross the plate for the winning run on a sacrifice fly.

The Jackals opened up the scoring in the top of the first inning when second baseman Marcus Sanders singled and scored following a passed ball and a wild pitch as New Jersey lead 1-0 before the Rox came up to bat.

After Brockton scored an unearned run in the bottom of the fourth inning to tie the game at one, New Jersey counted in the top of the fifth when shortstop Casey Gordon cleared the bases with a three-run double to give the Jackals a 4-1 lead. The Rox pulled within one with two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. In the sixth, Vander Hey led off with his third home run of the season off Jackals reliever Brandon Martin to even up the score at four. That score held until the 12th innings. Davis (0-2) took the loss while Brockton reliever Mike McTamney earned the win. Davis allowed one unearned run in 1 2/3 innings of relief. Aaron Tressler started for New Jersey and surrendered three runs - two earned - on seven hits over five innings. Brockton starter Rolando Viera pitched seven innings, allowing four runs on eight hits.

The Jackals travel to Worcester to begin a four-game series against the Tornadoes on Monday night. Right-hander Ryan Pacyna gets the start for New Jersey. Catch every pitch via live webcast at www.jackals.com with coverage beginning five minutes prior to the start of the game.
