New Jersey Jackals News Release
Little Falls, NJ - The New Jersey Jackals used four longballs to throttle the Worcester Tornadoes, 9-4, and end their four game losing streak. The teams complete their three game series on Saturday night in Worcester.
Walks hurt New Jersey's Joel Bennett in the bottom of the first. He walked two batters with two outs, leading to an RBI single by Zack Strong, putting the Tornadoes out in front first. But in the next half inning, New Jersey showed their resilience. In his second game with the Jackals, Francisco Lebron belted this third homerun, a solo shot, to level the score.
The Jackals took the lead in the top of the fourth, once again scoring a pair of runs on a couple of solo homeruns. Ricardo Cordova led off the inning with his eighth of the season, and Lebron homered again for New Jersey, his fourth in two ballgame, making it a 3-1 lead for New Jersey. But The Tornadoes again tied it up in the bottom frame. A bloop RBI single by Lucas Taylor brought Worcester within one, and an error by third baseman Matt Hagen on a run down, allowed him to score, tying the score at three.
The score would stay that way until the top of the seventh, when the Jackals blew the game wide open. A Steve Checksfield three-run homerun broke the deadlock, and Jake Whitesides scored on a balk by Worcester reliever Eddie Pena. At the conclusion of seven complete innings, New Jersey led 7-3 over the Tornadoes. And in the eighth, they'd add to that lead. A two RBI single by Lebron, bringing his total to four RBIs on the day, made it 9-3, New Jersey.
Worcester added a run to their total in the bottom of the eighth on a Keith Beauregard RBI, but that's all they would get.
Joel Bennett got the win in seven complete innings, while throwing 125 pitches. He gave up three runs, two earned, on six hits, three walks, while fanning a season-high 10 batters. Horace Lawrence struck out the side in the bottom of the ninth.
The loss went to Worcester's Derrell McCall in six and two thirds innings pitched. He surrendered seven earned runs on eight on hits, while walking one, and striking out eight. What killed him were the four homeruns that he let up in the ballgame.
