Davilla Drives Spirit Past Quebec

August 12, 2005 - Canadian American League (Can-Am)
North Shore Spirit News Release

An off day on Thursday did nothing to quell the hot hitting of Vic Davilla, as the Spirit first baseman went 2-4 with a home run and four RBI to lead North Shore past the Quebec Capitales 9-2 in the series opener on Friday night at the New Fraser Field.

John Kelly picked up his 10th win for the Spirit allowing two runs on eight hits while striking out four in seven innings of work. Coogie Freedman took the loss for Quebec allowing five runs on seven hits in four innings. The victory improved the Spirit to 16-9, while the Capitales dropped to 14-10.

For the second straight game, North Shore came through with a big first inning, and once again Davilla keyed the offensive attack. Davilla entered this game on a hot streak with five home runs and 19 RBI in his last 10 games. He showed no signs of cooling off against a Quebec club that boasted the league's best ERA.

After Garrett Weir drew a first-inning walk from the leadoff position and Rob Fischer reached on a double, Davilla gave the Spirit the early lead with a monster three-run shot over the right field wall. Travis Olgesby and Alex Trezza followed with back to back singles, and both advanced into scoring position on a balk from the Quebec starter. Brian Macchi sent Oglesby home with a ground ball to the second baseman. Trezza then crossed the plate on a wild pitch, giving the Spirit a 5-0 advantage after just one inning.

The Capitales cut into the Spirit lead in the third inning, scoring two runs on three hits. After back to back singles from Simon Légaré and T.J. Shimizu, Lee Delfino walked to load the bases. Eddie Lantigua singled to score Légaré with Quebec's first run of the game, and Shimizu scored the second run on a groundout from Buck McNabb.

The Spirit added three more runs of their own in the sixth inning, all unearned, to establish their biggest lead of the night. Agramonte got things started with a walk, advanced to second on a wild pitch, and moved to third on a balk. Garrett Weir followed with a ground ball to the infield. The Capitales second baseman opted to throw home to catch Agramonte breaking for the plate, but the catcher misplayed the ball allowing the run to score. Weir took second on the bobble, and after a walk to Fischer, scored on a single from Davilla. Trezza pushed the eighth run across the plate, scoring Fischer with a single up the middle.

The Spirit added one more run in the seventh inning to close out the scoring. Agramonte walked and scored on a triple from Yuri Sanchez.

Benefiting from a big lead, Jarrett Sues pitched two innings of scoreless relief to preserve the Spirit victory.

The series with the Capitales resumes tomorrow night at the New Fraser Field. There will be special 5:15 start times for the games tomorrow night and Sunday night. The Spirit will pay tribute to Manning Bowl tomorrow, with the first 500 fans through the gates receiving Stadium replicas.
