New Haven County Cutters News Release
Any night a team scores 9 runs on 13 hits, it would usually dominate the headlines. But it was southpaw hurler Brad Whitworth who stole the show for the New Haven County Cutters, tossing six and two thirds innings of no-hit ball as the Cutters cruised to a 9-0 victory over the Elmira Pioneers on Friday night. The game was called after a lengthy rain delay entering the bottom of the seventh.
Whitworth was dominant right from the first pitch. Not a power pitcher, his various off-speed and breaking pitches fluttered towards home with the movement of a firefly on a humid summer night. He struck out five in his seven shutout innings and earned his fourth victory with the Cutters.
He was given more than enough run support in the bottom half of the first inning, as the Cutters jumped on Pioneers starter John Dillinger, making his first appearance for the visitors. Four runners crossed the plate in the home half of the first, as the Cutters batted around for the first. They would duplicate that feat three innings later when the lead was increased to 9-0 after a five run outburst in the home half of the fourth. New Haven County's third baseman Junior Zamora continued his hot hitting, going 3 for 4 with four RBIs. Bill Peavey extended his consecutive games on-base streak to 40 with an RBI double in the first inning.
As the light rained turned into a more significant downpour in the top of the seventh, the Pioneers finally got to Whitworth. With two outs, Jeremy Booth found the hole between third base and shortstop to register the first hit of the night for the Elmira club. The crowd of 2341 gave Whitworth a loud ovation after the single in recognition of his dazzling effort.
It is Halloween at Yale Field on Saturday night starting at 7:05. Come to the ballpark in full Halloween gear because there will be pre-game trick or treating and a costume contest. Tim Keinath (2-5) toes the rubber for the Cutters while the Pioneers send Ryan Dittfurth (0-1) to the mound.
