
Four in Ninth Extends Streak to Ten

The Calgary Vipers rallied in the bottom of the ninth inning for four runs to defeat the Yuma Scorpions 9-8 at Foothills Stadium in Calgary, Alberta. With the victory the Vipers have now won ten consecutive games to increase their franchise record. Down 6-0 in the game Calgary started the comeback in the sixth with three runs and finished it off with the four-run heroics in the ninth. The Snakes have now swept three straight series and improve to 4-0 on the second half of the Golden Baseball League's season.
Newcomer Travis Hughes (2-0) picked up his second victory in as many appearances throwing two innings and allowing one run while striking out two. Cristian Mendoza (1-3) took the loss in giving up all four runs in the ninth.
At the plate Ivan Reyes led the way going four-for-five while Nelson Castro went three-for-five with three runs scored.
Yuma opened the scoring in the top of the second inning with two outs as Jonathan Lozada walked and William Hernandez hit a home run for a 2-0 lead.
The Scorpions added to their lead in the fourth inning as Ismael Castro doubled, Diover Avila laid down a sacrifice bunt and reached on a throwing error, and Carlos Pupo hit a three-run shot for a 5-0 advantage.
Another run was supplied in the fifth as Adolfo Gomez and Castro both doubled for a 6-0 lead.
Calgary cut the lead in half in the bottom of the sixth as Nelson Castro doubled, scored on a Drew Miller run batted in single, and Caonabo Cosme nailed his first home run of the season for a 6-3 score.
Yuma got a run back in the next half inning as Reynaldo Rodriguez doubled, moved to third base on a wild pitch, and scored on a Castro RBI sacrifice fly for a 7-4 advantage.
Back came the Snakes in the bottom of the seventh as Ivan Reyes doubled and scored on a Castro RBI single. Jorge Mejia and Colin Moro followed with walks to load the bases and Miller was hit by a pitch for a RBI and a 7-5 score.
The Scorpions added a run in the ninth as Deivis Rivadeneira walked, moved to second on a groundout, and scored on a Rodriguez base hit for a 8-5 lead.
In the bottom of the ninth the rally started with a Fehlandt Lentini double, Castro single which after an error allowed Lentini to scored, Mejia also singled, Moro hit a sacrifice fly, Miller walked to load the bases, and Cosme hit a sacrifice fly to tie the game. Rick Guarno followed with a walk, Reyes reached on an infield single, and Dillon O'Krane on a two-out, three-two count, brought in the winning run with a base hit for a 9-8 final.
The Vipers now have a three day break from action for the Golden Baseball League's All-Star Game which takes place Tuesday July 14th at 7:05 PM MDT in St. George, Utah. Heading down from the Snakes are manager Morgan Burkhart, Nelson Castro, Evan Greusel, Fehlandt Lentini, Jorge Mejia, Drew Miller, Colin Moro, and Joseph Sergent. Also selected to the team but unable to attend is Mac Suzuki. The game can be heard live online through www.stgeorgeroadrunners.com and there will be a Home Run derby at 6:00 PM MDT featuring Castro, Lentini, and Miller.
Calgary returns to second half action on Thursday July 16th at 7:05 PM MDT against the Chico Outlaws. At the ballpark that night World Skills will be on hand to showcase what will take place at the World Skills Games coming up in September. On Friday July 17th at 2:35 PM MDT the Vipers will play a special Dog Days of Summer matinee game where dog toys will be handed out to the first 1000 fans. Saturday July 18th at 5:05 PM MDT the Zoomobile from the Calgary Zoo will be on site with animals and giveaways for the double-header action. This five-games-in-four-days series wraps up Sunday July 19th at 1:35 PM MDT with a "You Already Have What it Takes" Police Recruitment day at the stadium.
