State College Spikes News Release

BROOKLYN, NY - The State College Spikes jumped out in front early, but the Brooklyn Cyclones responded with an offensive onslaught that included ten extra-base hits and four home runs to down the Spikes, 9-3, at MCU Park on Saturday night.

State College (11-11) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first on Matt Curry's two-run double down the left field line. However, Brooklyn (13-9) right fielder Cory Vaughn tied the game up in the bottom of the first with a two-run home run over the left field fence, his first of two in the game. After the Cyclones piled up a 7-3 lead in the seventh, Vaughn led off with a solo homer to left, his sixth of the season.

Rylan Sandoval and Kurt Steinhauer also hit homers for the Cyclones, who pounded six doubles as well, with three belonging to James Schroeder. Brooklyn took a series sweep from the Spikes with the win.

Adalberto Santos drove in a run for the Spikes with an RBI groundout in the fifth inning, but went 0-for-4 in the game, snapping his on-base streak at 18 games and his hitting streak at 10 games. Santos's on-base streak had spanned his entire tenure with State College.

The Spikes did get offensive contributions from Gift Ngoepe and Walker Gourley, who each rapped two base hits.

Zack Dodson (0-1) started and took the loss for State College, allowing four runs, three of them earned, on sixth hits and two walks over three innings. Dodson also struck out one batter.

Brooklyn starter Chris Hilliard (4-0) earned the victory with six innings of work, allowing three runs on eight hits and a walk while striking out four.

Sunday, the Spikes return home to Medlar Field at Lubrano Park to host the Vermont Lake Monsters, affiliate of the Washington Nationals, in the first game of a three-game set. Game time is set for 6:05 p.m. State College will send right-hander Quinton Miller (0-0) to the mound for his second start of a minor league rehabilitation assignment. Vermont will counter with left-hander Chad Jenkins (1-2), the 17th-round pick of the Nationals in 2009 out of Kennesaw State.

It will also be a day of family fun at the ballpark on Summer Blast-Off Sunday, presented by the Centre Daily Times. Fans can bring out their gloves for a pre-game catch on the field, then marvel at a spectacular post-game FIREWORKS display. Kids can also run the bases after the game, thanks to HealthSouth Nittany Valley Rehabilitation Hospital.

Plus, rev up the fun on Bike Night at the ballpark, presented by Kissell Motorsports and Stocker Chevrolet. Fans can participate in a Poker Run before the game, starting at Kissell Motorsports and ending at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. Registration for the Poker Run runs from 10 a.m. to noon, and proceeds benefit the Cancer Survivors Association. There will also be a raffle to benefit the CSA on the run. During the game, an array of motorcyle displays will be set up around the concourse, along with a bike parade on the field.
