USHL Madison Capitols

Four Caps Tally in Comeback Bid, Fall Just Short in SO

Madison Capitols News Release

Green Bay, WI - The Madison Capitols rallied from a 4-2 second period deficit to force overtime and eventually a shootout, but the U.S. National Team Development program came out on top, 5-4 on Sunday at Brown County Arena in the Subway Shootout.

In a script that closely followed Friday night's contest in the early stages, Madison struck on a chance just past the five-minute mark, as Haralds Egle found open space in the slot, took a feed from Guillaume Leclerc, and beat Team USA goaltender Adam Scheel to give Madison the 1-0 edge for a second straight game.

Fellow linemate Charlie Gerard had two mini-breakaway opportunities following the Egle goal, but caught iron once and saw a second opportunity sail just wide of Scheel.

Continuing with the parallels from Madison's Friday encounter with Green Bay, Team USA was able to get the game leveled before the first period's conclusion. Just less than three minutes after Egle opened the scoring, Logan Hutsko made a slick, spinning pass to Evan Barratt, who re-directed a backhand shot past Ryan Edquist to tie the score, 1-1, at 8:07.

The two teams rode a see-saw of momentum swings for much of the middle frame. Team USA jumped to a 2-1 lead on a tally from Joey Cassetti at just 1:39 of the period off a cycle.

Gerard was able to finally strike for Madison in response to tie the score at 6:26. The Ohio native had his first shot attempt from the slot blocked, but the rebound sat right at his feet to give him time to finish it off.

Scheel became the star of the second, fending off glorious opportunities from Egle and Gerard within 30 seconds of one another.

Scheel's prowess bought his team time to regain its offensive form, and Team USA picked up two unanswered goals from Josh Norris on a power play and Randy Hernandez at even strength to take a 4-2 lead with 7:29 to go in the frame.

However, Madison was undeterred, and after Team USA took a roughing penalty at 13:29, and after Scheel made a pair of spectacular saves in tight, Eugene Fadyeyev found a soft spot behind the defense and beat Scheel over the glove on a power play breakaway to make it 4-3 with 4:55 to go in the second.

Team USA had a quick chance to answer as Michael Pastujov walked in on Edquist on the left wing side, but the University of Minnesota commit shut it down to keep his club within a goal heading into the third.

The Capitols would not take their foot off the throttle in the third, and after Scheel continued to fend off the Madison advances, Alexandre Payusov finally brought Madison back to a 4-4 tie at 15:40. Payusov once again found a soft spot behind the defense and was able to beat Scheel on the blocker side for his second breakaway goal in as many games.

Madison had a glorious chance to win it in regulation with a 5-on-3 advantage in the game's final 2:45, but Scheel and Team USA was able to survive and force overtime.

In an extra period that featured barely any stoppages, Madison had the best chance as Egle found the puck on his stick between the circles but hit the post on his game-winning bid.

The two squads stalemated into a shootout, where Scheel denied Egle and Payusov. At the other end, Norris and Cassetti picked up shootout goals following their regulation tallies to clinch the victory for Team USA.
