Bloomington Thunder News Release
GREEN BAY, Wisconsin - The Cedar Rapids RoughRiders spoiled a win for the Bloomington Thunder in the third period of Sunday afternoon's game from Green Bay and took the game 4-3. The Thunder had scored three goals to give them the lead but were answered by three from the Riders to finish the game. Bloomington falls to .500 in the preseason with a 2-2-0 record.
The game opened with some question as the RoughRiders fired a puck toward the net on the power play and was ruled no goal on the ice. After some conversation with the goal judge, the officials determined it did go it and Jacob Hayhurst (RPI) was awarded his third goal of the preseason at 2:03 of the first.
Bloomington responded to the controversy with a goal of their own just over three minutes later. Jeremy Davies (Northeastern University) ripped one to the back of the net from the point to tie the game at one.
Mitchell Mattson (University of North Dakota) and Tarek Baker (University of Minnesota) put together a powerful combination on the power play for the Thunder. Mattson finished the first period with a goal on the man advantage at 17:59 and then followed it up with one to open the second period at 9:01. Baker assisted on both goals as the Thunder finished the night 2-7 on the power play.
Cedar Rapids made it 3-2 in the third to stop the bleeding as Colin Rutherford (Dartmouth College) found a rebound in front of Hayden Lavigne (University of Michigan) in the second period. Lavigne finished two periods with ten saves.
In the third, Cedar Rapids tied the game at the 8:07 mark with an unassisted goal from Zac Robbins when he split the defense and put the puck under the crossbar. With just over five minutes to play, Cedar Rapids took the lead on a scrum in front of the Thunder net. Casey Jerry (Minnesota State University-Mankato) got the goal to give him his first of the preseason.
Despite a late power play, the Thunder could not tie the game. Ben Blacker (Western Michigan University) ended the night with 19 saves and his second win of the preseason. Bloomington will travel to Madison on Sept. 19 for a 3 p.m. game against the Green Bay Gamblers to open another weekend showcase.
