Montreal Alouettes News Release
Montreal, November 16, 2011 - The Canadian Football League announced today the selection of its 2011 All-Stars and four Alouettes received the nod: Jamel Richardson, Brandon Whitaker, Josh Bourke and Chip Cox. The All-Stars were chosen by the 62 voting members of Football Reporters of Canada (FRC), eight CFL head coaches, and thousands of CFL fans from across the country. Although BC's Travis Lulay was selected as an All-Star at the quarterback position, Anthony Calvillo is still in the running for the CFL's Most Outstanding Player (MOP) Award which will be announced on November 25 in Vancouver. Unlike All-Star voting, fans do not have a say in the CFL's Player Awards.
Receiver: JAMEL RICHARDSON (2nd selection) CFL All-Star: 2008, 2011 Richardson had a break out campaign racking up a league-high 1,777 receiving yards, good for second place all-time in Alouettes history. He also tied the team record for the most receptions in a single season with 112 and set a new league record for 100-yard games in a season with 12.
Running back: BRANDON WHITAKER (1st selection) CFL All-Star: 2011 In his first season as the team's starting tailback, Whitaker did not disappoint, leading the league in rushing yards with 1,378. Whitaker's ability to be a dual threat in the backfield was evident as he also hauled in 638 receiving yards.
Tackle: JOSH BOURKE (1st selection) CFL All-Star: 2011 Bourke was part of an O-line which allowed just 34 sacks this season - tied for second fewest in the league and helped the Als' offence lead the CFL in a number of passing categories.
Linebacker: CHIP COX (3rd selection) CFL All-Star: 2009, 2010, 2011 Standout linebacker Chip Cox finished first on the Alouettes' defence for tackles with 78, including seven for a loss. He also tallied three interceptions which he returned for a combined 47 yards and ran back a fumble recovery 108 yards for a touchdown, tying a CFL record in the process.
