Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings News Release
FORT WORTH- Jon Dzimba collected four hits and Brandon Jones hit his sixth home run of the season to lead the Fort Worth Cats to a 13-7 victory Sunday night against the Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings at LaGrave Field.
The Cats (20-16) jumped on WhiteWings starter Coleman Stephens (3-2) with a 6-run first inning aided by two errors and highlighted by two singles from third baseman Dziomba, who was placed in the leadoff spot in the Fort Worth batting order just two days ago by manager Curtis Wilkerson.
"He works the count and is a very good hitter," said Wilkerson.
Then, with the score 6-3, Fort Worth picked up three more runs in the bottom of the second inning on a Shelby Ford single to drive in Chad Gabriel and Jones' 2-run homer to left field.
Ford collected three hits, including a double and run-scoring triple down the right field line off Erinzon Bautista in the bottom of the forth that highlighted a 4-run frame and also drove in three runs.
The victory allowed the Cats (20-16) to tie the WhiteWings for second place in the United League. Fort Worth is now on a three game winning streak after dropping seven of their previous eight games.
"In baseball you go through periods when you're good and clicking and other times when you're not," said Wilkerson.
Ruddy Yan collected three hits and scored twice for the WhiteWings, who have now lost four games in a row.
Trevor Harden (2-4) earned the victory for the Cats, pitching five runs and allowing seven hits and three earned runs.
The WhiteWings return home on Wednesday, July 4 at 6:35 p.m. against San Angelo for Fireworks Night, sponsored by the City of Harlingen.
