Abilene Prairie Dogs News Release
SAN ANGELO, TX - For the third consecutive start, Colts lefty Jose Sanchez would face off against the Abilene Prairie Dogs. Tonight, the Fort Worth native used his knowledge of the Prairie Dogs hitters and pinpoint control to lead San Angelo to a 6-4 victory.
After allowing a lead off base hit to CF Jason Martin to start the game, Sanchez set down 16 consecutive hitters until a base hit by Chris Caves in the fifth. Caves was quickly erased on a 5-4-3 double play hit by 1B Nick Ochoa.
The Dogs finally broke through against Sanchez in the seventh inning when 3B Wilson Batista started the inning with a double down the left field line. LF Joe Weik then brought him on a 2-0 pitch and moved to second on the throw. DH Kyle Nichols, making his first start since last Sunday, followed with a base hit to put runners on the corners. After C Chris Caves popped out for the first out of the inning, Nick Ochoa worked a walk to spell the end for Jose Sanchez.
With reliever Russel Johns on the mound, Zach Welch hit a clutch 2-run single to close the Colts lead to 4-3. Jason Martin flied out to end the threat.
Sanchez' final line was one of his best of the season. In 6.1 innings he allowed 6 hits, 3 runs, walked 1 and did not strike out a batter. It was the second consecutive outing in which he did not strike out a batter.
The Colts offense scored single runs in each the innings they scored in, including each of their final four at-bats. After the Prairie Dogs cut the lead to 4-3 in the 7th inning, San Angelo took advantage of reliever Todd Weldon's throwing error. 2B Jason Diaz singled to start the inning then advanced to third when Weldon threw away a pick off attempt. Diaz came in on Daryl Jones' single to make it 5-3 Colts.
In the 8th, SS Adam De La Garza singled to start the inning for Abilene and moved to third on a pair of wild pitches. With one out, Joe Weik drove in his second RBI of the game and pulled Abilene within one again. In the bottom half of the inning, C Michael Pair singled with one out then came in to score on an error committed by De La Garza to give San Angelo the winning margin. It was Adam's 9th error of the season.
Abilene starter Braden Tullis, making his first start since June 16 pitched into the 6th inning. In 5.2 innings he allowed 8 hits, 4 runs, walked 2 and struck out 5. With the loss he falls to 2-2 on the season.
Closer Erik Draxton picked up his league-leading 10th save of the season with a 1-2-3 9th inning.
The Prairie Dogs and Colts continue their 3 game series tomorrow night at Foster Field. Listen live to the First Financial Pre-Game Show at 6:55 on Abileneprairiedogs.com and 106.9 KLGD and the first pitch at 7:05pm.
