Abilene Prairie Dogs News Release
EDINBURG, TX - In a series dominated by the bats, it was only fitting that a pitcher's duel between LHP Adam Rowe and RHP Dave Dineli would develop in the final game of the series. However, it was in the 8th inning with both starters out of the game that the finale would be decided.
With one out against reliever Scott Vander Weg, RF Tim Battle reached on an error by the SS Adam De La Garza. Battle then proceeded to steal second and third base, the first of which on a pitch-out. Carlos Santana then hit a SAC fly to center field to score the winning run.
The Prairie Dogs rallied in the 9th inning against closer Robert Roth. LF Case Rigby started the inning with a walk and pinch-hitter Kyle Nichols followed him with a softly hit single. Adam De La Garza bunted them into scoring position then CF Jason Martin hit a ground ball to first base. 1B Cristobal Santana's throw was on target and Rigby was cut down at the plate. Zach Welch flied out to right to end the threat.
The 3-2 victory gave the Roadrunners a series win in the 4 game series over the Prairie Dogs and improved them to 22-14. Abilene meanwhile fell to 15-20, 6.5 games off the pace set by Edinburg.
The Prairie Dogs got on the board first in the 3rd inning. Bryan Fogle and Adam De La Garza walked to start the inning then Jason Martin grounded into a double play for just the second time this season. With two outs, Fogle came into score on a wild pitch by starter Dave Dinelli.
Edinburg responded with two runs in the fifth inning. 1B Cristobal Santana started the inning with a double then scored on C Eric Bloom's single to tie the game at one. Bloom later came in on a ground out by 2B Wilmer Pino.
After the Prairie Dogs scratched out the tying run in the top of the sixth, starter Adam Rowe found himself in a pickle with one out in the bottom half of the inning. With the bases loaded and one out, Eric Bloom smacked a line drive at the pitcher. Rowe gloved it and quickly doubled off Felix Molina from 3rd to escape the inning.
In the 7th Rowe loaded the bases with two outs and Manager Bobby Brown opted for reliever Scott Vander Weg. With the Roadrunners' most dangerous hitter DH Carlos Hereaud at the plate and the bases loaded, Vander Weg got him to pop out to 1B Joe Weik on a 1-0 pitch.
For the second consecutive start, Adam Rowe set his season high in walks. After walking 5 in his last start against San Angelo, Rowe walked 6 Roadrunners in 6.2 innings. He also allowed 6 hits and struck out 6 while yielding just 2 runs. It was the 7th time in 8 starts that Rowe allowed 3 runs of less.
Dave Dinelli took a no-decision in his best start of the season. Dinelli allowed 5 hits, 2 runs, walked 5 and struck out 9 in 7.1 innings. It was his longest start of the season and set a season-high in strikeouts.
The Prairie Dogs begin a 3-game series with the San Angelo Colts tomorrow night in San Angelo. Listen live to the First Financial Pre Game Show at 5:55 with the first pitch at 6:05pm on Abileneprairiedogs.com and 106.9 KLGD.
