San Angelo Colts News Release
San Angelo, Texas --- The Colts fended off a late rally to defeat the Abilene Prairie Dogs 6-4 Sunday night at Foster Field.
Starter Jose Sanchez held Abilene scoreless through the first six innings, and retired 13 in a row from the first into the fifth. Sanchez (1-1) gave up three runs on six hits in 6 1/3 innings to earn the win.
The Colts scored a run in all but two innings, and led 4-0 after left fielder Jason Crosland's leadoff home run in the sixth. It was Crosland's fifth homer of the season, and San Angelo's first round-tripper since June 19.
Following Crosland's home run, Abilene starter Braden Tullis was pulled in favor of reliever Todd Weldon. Tullis (2-2) took the loss, giving up four runs on eight hits in 5 2/3 innings.
The Prairie Dogs' offense came alive with three runs in the seventh. Abilene began the inning with three consecutive hits against Sanchez, knocking him out of the game. Reliever Russell Johns finished the inning, but did surrender a two-run single to second baseman Zach Welch. The base hit cut Abilene's deficit to 4-3.
That proved to be as close as Abilene would get, though. The Colts bullpen gave up just one run in 2 2/3 innings to close out the Prairie Dogs. Closer Erik Draxton pitched a scoreless ninth to earn his league-best 10th save.
The win improves the Colts to 19-17, while the loss drops Abilene to 15-21. San Angelo has now won four games in a row.
This series continues Monday with Fireworks Night, sponsored by Basic Energy, and Haircuts in the Ballpark, sponsored by SportClips. The fireworks will begin shortly after the final out is recorded. Gates open at 6:05 p.m., and first pitch is set for 7:05 p.m.
