Fort Myers Mighty Mussels News Release
FORT MYERS, Fla. - In their first night in Miracle jerseys since 2019, the Fort Myers Mighty Mussels erased a five-run deficit to defeat Jupiter 8-7 in ten innings at Hammond Stadium Thursday.
On the first Throwback Thursday in Miracle gear this season, Fort Myers (6-0) trailed 7-2 entering the bottom of the eighth. After a fielder's choice and a walk, the Mussels had two men on with two outs. That brought up first baseman Dillon Tatum, who blasted a momentum-shifting three-run bomb to bring the Mussels back within striking distance at 7-5.
Still trailing 7-5 in the bottom of the ninth, Fort Myers loaded the bases with two walks and a hit batter. With one out, Kala'i Rosario hit a ground ball to the third basemen, who attempted a double play. Second baseman Angeudis Santos made the turn to try and seal the win for Jupiter, but bounced the throw to first, allowing Emmanuel Rodriguez to score and tie the game at 7-7.
The Hammerheads were shut down in the top of the tenth inning by Matthew Swain (1-0), putting the bat back in the Mussels' hands. Dylan Neuse reached first safely on a fielder's choice, putting runners at first and second. Daniel Ozoria then lined a single to right field, loading the bases for Noah Miller.
Miller grounded a ball to the pitcher, who flipped to the catcher for a force out. Jupiter catcher David Martinez fired to first for the double play, but the throw ricocheted into right field to bring home the winning run. The come-from-behind victory gives Fort Myers their first 6-0 start since 2013.
Emmanuel Rodriguez reached base five times on three walks and two singles, extending his league lead in walks (11). Rodriguez also came around to score twice in the late innings to help decide the game.
Jupiter scored five runs in the top of the third on long home runs from Khalil Watson and Kyler Castillo, jumping out to a 6-1 lead after three. The teams traded a run in the middle innings before the Mussels scored six over the final three frames.
Twins rehabber Cody Stashak worked a perfect fourth inning in his first official outing of 2022. Right-hander Malik Barrington tossed two scoreless frames in his Mighty Mussels debut.
Fort Myers will turn to John Stankiewicz (1-0, 3.60) to try and stay undefeated on Friday. Chris Mokma (0-1, 10.80) makes the start for Jupiter. Coverage begins at 6:45 p.m. on the Mighty Mussels Baseball Network.
