Cardinals Win on Walk-Off for Third Straight Night

Palm Beach Cardinals News Release
The Palm Beach Cardinals can be forgiven if they think every baseball game ends with a walk-off.
Because each of the team's past three matchups has ended in that fashion.
In a series against the Daytona Tortugas defined by late-inning heroics, a pitching miscue sealed the celebration for Palm Beach at Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium on Friday night. Tortugas relief pitcher Jayvien Sandridge suffered a bases-loaded wild pitch with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, scoring Cardinals second baseman Franklin Soto and capping a 4-3 win for the home team. Sandridge is the second Daytona pitcher in as many nights to be inserted in the final frame and fail to hold a tie game.
After pinch hitter Luis Rodriguez led off with a strikeout in the ninth, Soto and shortstop Jeremy Rivas singled, and Thursday's hero Osvaldo Tovalin walked. Catcher Wade Stauss was batting with a 2-2 count when the game-ending wild pitch was made.
Ironically, it was also a wild pitch that allowed Palm Beach to tie the game an inning earlier. With the Cardinals trailing 3-2, Daytona set-up man Brett Lockwood's wild pitch brought home Tovalin. The Tortugas only escaped the inning tied with the help of a double play.
After Daytona opened the scoring with two runs in the top of the first, Tovalin drove in left fielder Tyler Reichenborn on a sacrifice fly in the bottom half of the inning. Palm Beach tied the contest in the sixth with a Hansel Otamendi RBI fielder's choice.
Alex Cornwell made his first Single-A start Friday for the Cardinals but only got through one out in the third inning, having allowed two runs (one earned) on the night. Ludwin Jimenez gave Palm Beach 3.2 scoreless and hitless frames on five strikeouts and a walk. Hayes Heinecke threw the seventh and eighth innings for the Cardinals and allowed a run, while Nelfri Contreras picked up the win via a shutout ninth.
Offensively, Rivas and Stauss led Palm Beach with two hits each.
After falling on Tuesday night, the Cardinals improved to 4-3 and clinched at least a series split on Friday after winning their third straight. Palm Beach will have two chances to secure an outright series victory over Daytona, with the first being tomorrow night's 6:00 p.m. first pitch.
