Fort Myers Mighty Mussels News Release
FORT MYERS, Fla. - The Fort Myers Mighty Mussels took advantage of seven St. Lucie Mets errors Saturday, earning their sixth straight victory by a 9-4 margin at Hammond Stadium.
The Mussels (16-13) scored in five of their eight offensive frames, plating five unearned runs.
Left-hander Juan Pichardo (1-0) sparkled in relief, tossing three hitless innings to earn his first Low-A win.
After both teams exchanged runs in the first two innings, the game remained tied 3-3 until the bottom of the fourth. After Kyle Schmidt walked, Willie Joe Garry Jr. pulled a base hit into right. Two batters later, Edouard Julien lifted a fly ball to center field that was dropped by Mets (16-13) outfielder Alexander Ramirez. The defensive miscue allowed both runners to score and give Fort Myers a 5-3 lead.
After the Mussels tacked on a run in the sixth, Aaron Sabato drew a one-out walk in the seventh. Jeferson Morales and Yunior Severino followed with singles to load the bases. Misael Urbina then delivered a sacrifice fly to center to make it 6-3. After another error plated Morales to make it 7-3, Schmidt cranked an RBI triple off the wall in center to extend the lead to 8-3.
The Mighty Mussels' six-game winning streak is their longest of the season. They look to sweep St. Lucie at 12 pm on Sunday. Brent Headrick (2-1, 4.32) makes the start for Fort Myers, opposed by Oscar Rojas (0-0, 0.00) of the Mets. Coverage begins at 11:45 am on the Mighty Mussels Baseball Network.
