Quad City Steamwheelers News Release
DAVENPORT, Iowa â There were two, now there is only one â week left in the Arena Football League's 18th season and the final playoff spots and home field advantage are all still up for grabs. This past weekend, four former Quad City Steamwheelers helped their teams make the final push to ArenaBowl XVIII.
The expansion New Orleans VooDoo clinched a playoff spot last week, but still have an opportunity to host a quarterfinal game. The VooDoo can clinch a home game by knocking off the Austin Wranglers this weekend. Wide receiver/linebacker Ira Gooch, who played for the Steamwheelers for two seasons, had 13 rushing yards and 81 receiving yards. That was good enough for two touchdowns in the 59-51 to the Tampa Bay Storm.
The Los Angeles Avengers eliminated the Los Vegas Gladiators from playoff contention this past weekend. The Gladiators dropped an emotional 54-51 decision on Saturday at the Staples Center. Two former âWheelers were on the losing end of things. Fullback/linebacker Franker Carter had 8 rushing yards and a touchdown. On the defensive end, he had two solo tackles and a pass breakup. Teammate, and former âWheeler, wide receiver/defensive back Dennison Robinson had 71 receiving yards and a touchdown. He also had an assisted tackle on defense.
New York Dragons offensive lineman/defensive lineman Tim McGill still has the Dragons playoff hopes on the line after a heartbreaking 65-41 loss to the Orlando Predators. The Dragons are one of three teams battling for the eighth and final playoff spot. In the loss, McGill had 2.5 tackles. The AFL is on NBC every Sunday afternoon.
