Laredo Law News Release

LAREDO, Texas – For Laredo Law fullback-linebacker Trey Merkins the words ‘born to play football' are extremely appropriate. Merkins is the son of former NFL player Guido Merkins.

"On the day I was born my dad signed with the Houston Oilers," said Trey. "We moved to Houston the next day."

Trey grew up in NFL locker rooms as his father played 10 years in the NFL with Houston, New Orleans and Philadelphia.

"I was little when my dad was playing," said Trey. "I knew my dad played football. The kids I hung out with, all their dads played football. I thought everyone's dad played football."

It was only a matter of time until Trey, his first name is Guido and he is the third in line thus the nickname ‘Trey', stepped onto the gridiron himself. Trey had a standout career at San Antonio Clark High School where he was a first team All-District selection and Defensive MVP as a senior.

After high school he attended the University of Texas El Paso where he became a first team All-WAC selection at linebacker in 2000. He was also named the WAC's top linebacker by USA Today.

"I just have fun on the field," said Trey. "I like everything about football. It's the only place where you can run and hit people as hard as you can and have people cheer for you. I'll keep playing until they make me stop."

After playing at UTEP he attended camp with the NFL Atlanta Falcons in 2001, but injured his left knee. The following season he was sent to the Rhein Fire of NFL Europe. Trey went thru training camp with the Fire, but did not play because he was still suffering the effects of the left knee injury the previous year.

Merkins, who plays fullback-linebacker, got to know the arenafootball2 game last year with the San Diego Riptide.

"You have a lot to learn because it's a completely different game," explained Trey about af2. "Everyone is good on one side of the ball, but learning the other side is tough."

The continued transition to the indoor game has been helped this year due to previous experience and also by playing with some familiar faces. While with the Miners he partnered with current Law teammates QB Rocky Perez, WR/DB Terrance Minor and OL/DL Ariel Famaligi as UTEP captured the 2000 WAC championship. Merkins and Perez played against each other in high school in San Antonio before attending UTEP together.

"Playing against Rocky in high school was fun," said Trey. "I would much rather be playing with him than against him. Having Rocky here I am confident we are going to win a lot of games in Laredo."

Trey joined the Law on May 13th. He didn't attend training camp or start the season with the Law because he was completing several courses at UTEP. He is working on his B.A. in Criminal Justice and needs six hours to complete his degree.

Despite the late start he has made an impact with a safety in the Law's first win against Tulsa and the game winning TD catch a week later against Rio Grande Valley.

He has three brothers; Jeremiah, Turner, and Matthew, and one sister, Ali.

The Law is on the road this Saturday night in Wichita. Laredo returns home on June 5th against the Oklahoma City Yard Dawgz. For tickets call (956) 726-GAME (4263) or go online at www.laredolaw.com.
