The deuce scoop

May 26, 2004 - arenafootball2 (af2) News Release

IT'S NO RUSH: The Rio Grande Valley Dorados are not just on track to break the af2 record for fewest rushing yards allowed in a season, they are on pace to obliterate it. The 2000 Quad City Steamwheelers currently hold the top spot, allowing 133 yards on the season. Through seven games the Dorados have given up 28 yards rushing with an average of four yards rushing allowed each game. The Dorados are on pace to give up only 64 rushing yards on the entire season.

WHO LET THE UNDERDOGS OUT?: This season there has been eighteen games played between teams on the af2 Coaches' Poll. Currently the higher ranked team has been victorious eleven times, while the lower ranked team has seven victories. Going into last week lower ranked teams had only four victories, but upsets by Oklahoma City, Florida and Memphis has brought the records closer. This week features matchups between number one Wilkes-Barre/Scranton and number four Louisville, number two Birmingham and number eight Tennessee Valley, along with number seven Florida and number ten Memphis.

SECOND REALLY IS THE BEST: Conventional wisdom suggests you should always strive to be number one, but based on results of teams in the Top 12 this season, you may want to re-think that logic. So far this season, teams ranked No. 1 in the af2 Coaches' Poll are off to a 3-4 record in the games they enter ranked No. 1. Below is a look at how ranked teams have performed this season:

WHEN RANKED W-L .PCT
No. 1 3-4 .429
No. 2 7-1 .875
No. 3 3-4 .429
No. 4 6-1 .857
No. 5 5-3 .625

FLAG ON THE PLAY: One thing head coaches always preach is winning teams can't commit penalties. For whatever reason though, this is not holding true this season. The record of the five teams who have committed the fewest penalty yards is 13-22 while the record of the teams who have committed the most penalty yards is 24-12. Below is a breakdown of teams who have committed the fewest and the most penalty yards.

RANK/TEAM RECORD PENALTY YARDS
1. Hawaii 5-2 244
2. Peoria 2-5 322
3. Laredo 2-5 323
4. Central Valley 1-6 336
5. Green Bay 3-4 346
21. Quad City 6-2 483
22. W-B/Scranton 6-1 531
23. Tennessee Valley 5-2 536
24. Florida 4-3 572
25. Manchester 3-4 590

KEEPING UP WITH THE JONES: Memphis QB Brian Jones has elevated his play over his past five quarters of football and his team is enjoying a two-game high as a result. Though the first five games and three quarters of the season, Jones threw for 924 yards and 10 touchdowns with seven interceptions. Over the past five quarters of play (which includes the last quarter against Arkansas on May 15 and this past weekend's game at Bakersfield) Jones has thrown for 398 yards and nine touchdowns. He has also rushed for three more scores. On top of that, Jones has completed better than 85 percent of his attempts during that span, going 30-for-35 with no interceptions.

IT'S A LOCKE: Over the past two weeks, Albany's Tony Locke has made a steady climb up the receiving leader board. Catching 15 passes for 351 yards and nine touchdowns in just two games, Locke is suddenly three receiving touchdowns off the league lead of 21 and he is 234 yards away from Randall Lane's league-leading 944 receiving yards.

HAVEN'T WE BEEN HERE BEFORE: With a 52-49 over the Wolves last Friday, the Birmingham Steeldogs extended their winning streak to six games. It is the longest win streak of the 2004 season and ties the longest in Steeldogs' history. Back in the 2001 season, the Steeldogs rattled off six straight before falling to Tennessee Valley 52-48. This week the Steeldogs go for their seventh win in a row, but just like in 2001, they will have to get past the Vipers who they are 1-8 against all-time. The two teams hookup on Saturday at 8:30 p.m. ET in Birmingham.

HOME SWEET HOME: Road teams found success in Week 8, going 7-5 over the weekend. For the season home teams have gone 55-33 for a .625 win percentage. Last season home teams went 130-85-1 for a .604 win percentage. Overall in the history of af2 home teams have gone 501-330-1 for a .603 win percentage during the regular season. Below is a season-by-season chart:

SEASON HOME W-L-T HOME WIN %
2000 77-43-0 .642
2001 136-88-0 .607
2002 158-114-0 .581
2003 130-85-1 .604
2004 55-33-0 .625

SCORING LEADERS: Tulsa's Mitch Allner continues to hold a slim lead over Green Bay's Randall Lane as the league's top scorer, but Albany's Tony Locke is closing in on both men. Both Allner and Randall are still on pace to challenge the all-time single season scoring record of 284 points by Shon King during the 2000 season. Allner is on pace for 301, while Lane could hit 288. Below is a look at the Top 5 scorers in af2 through Week 7:

PLAYER TEAM GP POINTS
Mitch Allner TUL 7 132
Randall Lane GBB 7 126
Tony Locke ALB 7 120
Ronney Daniels TEN 7 114
